Daniel Brian Smith
Mar 17, 2023

Daniel Brian Smith, 60, of New Bedford, died peacefully in his sleep at home on Friday, March 17, 2023. He was the husband of Mary Stanley-Smith for 31 years and a father to their four kids.

Born in East Hartford, CT, he was the son of the late George and Dorothy (Norton) Smith. He grew up in Avon where he met his wife before they moved to Marion in 1992 to raise their family.

Dan loved his community, he coached his kid's sports team including softball, baseball, and basketball. Dan formed the ORR Mattapoisett Rec High School Basketball league, was the Cubmaster in Marion, and went on many field trips over the years with his kids. He spent many days bringing his dog Rocky on long walks at Washburn Park or riding around town in his blue Mustang convertible. Dan also worked at Comcast for over 25 years before his retirement in 2021.

Survivors include his children, Ali Stephens and her husband Drew of West Dennis, Greg Smith of New Bedford, Nick Smith of Marion, and Julia Smith of New Bedford; his siblings, Steve Smith, David Smith, Brenda Whitenett, and Kevin Smith; his good friend Bill W.; and many nieces and nephews.

Dan's Funeral will be held Friday, March 24th at 10 am at the Saunders-Dwyer Mattapoisett Home for Funerals, 50 County Road, Mattapoisett. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 am at St. Patrick's Church Wareham, and burial will follow in St. Patrick's Cemetery. His visiting hours will be held Thursday from 4-7 pm in the funeral home.

Betsy C. (Dorr) Grassi

Betsy C. (Dorr) Grassi, 85, of Marion, passed away on March 8, 2023, in St. Luke's Hospital, New Bedford. She was the wife of the late Arego A. Grassi and the daughter of the late Harold and Marion (Peterson) Dorr.

She was born in New Bedford and lived in Marion for most of her life. She graduated from Wareham High School and received an associate degree from Kinyon Campbell Business School.

Mrs. Grassi worked as a bookkeeper for Beaton Cranberry Growers Service in Wareham for 20 years before retiring.

She was a member of Little Harbor Golf Club. She also enjoyed researching her family genealogy, bowling, and American Sign Language.

Survivors include her son, Alan Grassi and his wife, Mary of Wichita, KS; a brother, Alan Dorr of Panama City, FL; a son-in-law, Michael Thompson of Mattapoisett; 2 grandchildren, Kelly Vandegrift (Grassi) and her husband, Robert of Wichita, KS and AJ Grassi of Wareham; 3 great grandchildren, Kaidence Rich, Kaileigh Rich, and Hunter Vandegrift; as well as several beloved and devoted nieces and nephews. She was the mother of the late Stephanie Thompson.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, March 25, 2023, at Wesley United Methodist Church, 462 Main St., Wareham, MA. Please join us for lunch at the church following the service.

John J. Forest

John J. Forest of Rochester Ma passed at home March 5th after a long battle with Parkinson's Dementia.

Born in Haute Abourjagane, NB Canada 1939-2023.

Survived by wife Donna (Demers), Children, David (Lori), Tina (Chris) and Grandchildren Raven Bernier, Brooke Steed, Zachary Steed of Massachusetts.

He also leaves his three sons, Gerald and (Krista), Philip (Pamela), Anthony (Rebecca) and Grandchildren Ethan, Amber, and Nicholas all of Canada.

John served in the Army (Vietnam) Purple Heart Recipient, and retired as a Navy Seabee. John also retired from Cumberland Farms.

After Cremation he will rest at Bourne National Cemetery.

A service will be held Friday March 31st 10 am, at Sacred Heart Church of Middleboro Mass. In Lieu of flowers you may make a donation to Parkinson's Dementia.

Carol Shute

Carol Shute of Mattapoisett passed away on March 3, 2023.
Carol was born on March 13, 1934 in Rockland, Maine to Merial and Lawrence Shute.
She was a graduate of Fairhaven High School where she met her life long friends who later referred to themselves as the "Golden Girls".
Carol was an active member of the Mattapoisett Congregational Church.
She began her career at New England Telephone Company before moving to G. Bourne Knowles in Fairhaven. However, her longest tenure were her years as secretary at Brownell Boat Works in Mattapoisett.
Carol was an avid walker and could often be spotted walking around town. She was perhaps most easily recognized by her contagious laugh and sense of humor.
Carol will be remembered and celebrated at a graveside service at Cushing Cemetery in Mattapoisett on July 18, 2023 at 10:00 am. All are welcome.

Lydia Francis Coelho Dominici
Feb 28, 2023

Lydia Francis Coelho Dominici, 95, of Milford, passed away peacefully at Countryside Health Care where she was dearly loved. She was the daughter of the late Arthur and Belmira Coelho, sister of Deena Herlihy and Alice Tessicini and the late Elsie Hoberg. Lydia was born and raised on Lawrence Street in Milford. She graduated from Milford High School Class of ‘45 and attended Wilfred Academy Beauty School in Boston. She married Raymond L. Dominici in 1948 who passed away in 2013.

Lydia and Ray raised three daughters, Deb Letourneau, Amy Dominici and Denise Mello on Lawrence Street until they built a new house on Highland Street in 1965 complete with her own hair salon “Lydia’s Beauty Shop”. It was there that Lydia was beloved by her many Portuguese customers and of course, cut and styled hair for her whole family from the youngest grandchild to her elderly parents.

Lydia will surely be missed by all including two son-in laws, Gary Letourneau and Russell Mello, grandchildren Christopher and Adam Letourneau, LeeAnne and Haley Smith and Taylor and Olivia Mello, and six great grandchildren.

The funeral will be held Saturday, March 11, 2023 at 10am from the Consigli Ruggerio Funeral Home 46 Water St. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11am in the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church 5 East Main St. The burial will be in the St. Mary’s Cemetery on Cedar St.

Calling hours will be held Friday from 4 to 7pm.

Robert Ellis Mower
Feb 21, 2023

Robert Ellis Mower born in Burlington, Vermont on May 12 1932, son of Edna Rush Mower and E. Curtiss Mower and grandson of his beloved Papa Rush, all of Braintree, Massachusetts. Grew up and lived in Braintree Massachusetts. He died in Charlottesville, Virginia on February 21, 2023.

He was married for 51 years to his wife, Eleanor Sequeira Mower, who survives him.

He graduated from Thayer Academy, Braintree in 1950 and was the recipient in 1949 of The Harvard Book prize from Thayer Academy. Class president, captain of football team, active in student government, sports, member of Braintree All Souls Unitarian Church.

He attended Dartmouth College, member of Class of 1954 for three and a half years, transferred to Harvard University, graduated in 1955. He was a member of The Ripley Society of Dartmouth College until his death.

After graduation he worked in Los Angeles, Ca. for Los Angeles Times. Then moved back to Massachusetts, and worked in advertising for Eddie, Rucker, Nichols in Cambridge.

As he gravitated toward an appreciation for, and love of antiques and fine arts, which he was involved with for the rest of his life. Buying, selling, and appraising. He owned The Hobby Horse Antiques in Marion for close to 50 years, moving to Rochester, Mass. upon retirement. He created, owned and managed Compass Antiques Shows. Robert's previous experience in the Communications and PR business with the Los Angeles Times, The Wrigley Company and clients such as The Harvard Trust Company was a factor in his success.

He is also survived by his son, Marshall C. Mower and wife, Lila of Honolulu, Hawaii; daughter, Melissa B. Mower of Santa Rosa, Calif.; son-in-law, Richard B. Drumm of Barboursville, Va.; and daughter through marriage of 51 years, Lisa M. Hall, who he loved as his own and her husband, Jim.

Predeceased by his parents; sister, Cynthia Mower Leggett; brother-in-law, Alan C.F. Leggett; daughter, Melinda A. Mower; stepdaughter, Susan B. Drumm; and stepson, Robert W. Bishop, III.

Survived also by grandchildren, Victoria Drumm, Miranda Drumm Champlain, Robert Bishop, and Lee R. Hall; as well as five great-grandchildren; eight nieces and nephews.

After graduating from college, the majority of his life was spent in Marion, Mass., where he was a long-time member of The Kittansett Club and St. Gabriels Episcopal Church. He moved to Rochester, Mass. upon retirement and the sale of The Hobby Horse.

He was unfailingly kind, generous and counselor to many who sought his advice. He was widely known for unexpected gifts of local produce and homemade cookies and the unexpected cards and letters. He treasured his many friendships throughout his life. He loved the quote by Sam Walter Foss: "Let me live in a house by the side of the road and be a friend to man" and lived his life accordingly. He was a true friend and advisor to all who sought his company and advice. He was a true father to his stepchildren, who he never considered anything other than his own.

He was a driving force at Thayer academy. Was manager of his Dartmouth football team, and was very active on in working on The Dartmouth, a daily newspaper for that community. He was proud of his work on the paper, and spoke of it often. He was editor of his class yearbook at Thayer Academy. He had many lifelong friends, and was predeceased by most of them.

He was a true historian. Not only did he love discussing history, he loved reading and researching history. He was the same with family history, and loved to bring up old stories and events from his family's history as well. He loved creating beautiful landscapes and maintaining his property like a park. This please both him, his family and passersby. He was a special man that won't be forgotten.

He was a member of the Zeta Psi fraternity. Besides history and gardening, his lifelong passion was jazz music, which he continued to listen to and learn about until his last months of life. He was known for "Unky's Lessons" which he freely bestowed to any young people he connected with.

Private services will be held at a later date. Condolences may be shared with the family on the Tribute Wall of the Hill and Wood Funeral Service.

David J. Bolton

David J. Bolton, 93, of Dartmouth passed away at home on Monday February 20, 2023. He was the husband of Madeline (Goley) Mello Bolton and the late Deolinda "Linda" (Ventura) Bolton.

Born in New Bedford, the son of the late James and Elizabeth (Meehan) Bolton, he lived in Dartmouth for most of his life. He was a graduate of St. John's Preparatory School in Danvers and the College of the Holy Cross.

David had been the Chief Executive Officer of William McCaskie, Inc. in Westport for many years.

During the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps.

He is survived by his wife Madeline; three sons, David J. Bolton, Jr., Michael P. Bolton, and Andrew J. Bolton; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; Madeline's children, Susan Souza, Thomas Mello, and Russell Mello, and their families; and several nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Dr. James Bolton, Jr., Elizabeth Twomey, and Joseph Bolton.

His funeral will be held on Monday February 27th at 9 am from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by his Funeral Mass at St. Julie Billiart Church at 10 am. Claire M. (Shannon) Carvalho

Claire M. (Shannon) Carvalho, 83, of Mattapoisett passed away Sunday February 19, 2023, after a brief illness. She was the former wife of the late Raymond J. Carvalho.

Born in Fall River, the daughter of the James and Mary (Souza) Shannon, she lived in Fall River and Tiverton before moving to Mattapoisett in 1968. Claire graduated from Durfee High School in 1958 and received a Bachelor of Education degree from Salve Regina University in 1962.

Claire was a teacher at Mt. St. Mary's Academy in Fall River and Upper Cape Regional High School in Bourne in the 1960's and early 1970's. She then was the S.E. Mass. Regional Director for Easter Seals for 25 years from 1973-1998. Claire later was the Director of Development at Nativity Preparatory School in New Bedford from 2005-2022. She had been honored many times for her selfless, giving and caring work and was a highly respected woman in Southeastern Massachusetts and beyond.

Claire loved working in her garden, taking care of her German Shepherds, hosting family get-togethers, and talking politics and life. For years she was an avid runner and walker. She was so proud of her work raising millions of dollars helping children and adults with disabilities live a full life and continued the same role serving low-income young men with very challenging lives pursue such a quality education. Claire was most proud of her four sons and loved them dearly giving them the foundation in life to be successful, caring adults along with leading by example, displaying inspiration and courage needed especially during life's challenges. She taught them nobody was better than anyone else, to serve others and the greater good, along with respecting people of all races and cultures. Claire lived by Dr. Martin Luther King's motto "A life well served is a life serving others." She will be dearly missed by all.

Claire is survived by her four sons, Raymond and wife Sunny of Pinson, AL, Steven and Christopher, both of Mattapoisett, and Jeffrey and his companion Maria of Chula Vista, CA; her daughter-in-law, Carol of Mattapoisett; her siblings, James Shannon of Dartmouth and Carolyn Carvalho of Swansea; nine grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Her funeral will be held on Saturday February 25th at 9 am from the Saunders-Dwyer Mattapoisett Home for Funerals, 50 County Rd., Route 6, Mattapoisett, followed by her Funeral Mass at St. Anthony's Church at 10 am. Burial will be in St. Anthony's Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Friday February 24th from 2-6 pm. Richard J. Moniz

Richard J. Moniz, 81, of Rochester died February 16, 2023 peacefully at home.

He was the husband of Dr. Deborah A. Hartley, and the son of the late Francisco and Rosemary (Bento) Moniz. Richard was born and remained in New Bedford before moving to Rochester 35 years ago.

He was formerly employed as a police officer with the New Bedford Police Department for 28 years before retiring as detective. Prior to that, he was a machinist and served 4 years in the U.S. Coast Guard.

He enjoyed spending time with his family, working in his vegetable garden, listening to music, and the company of his dogs.

He had a sense for adventure, riding his motorcycle, traveling, boating, and spending time in Florida with his family and friends.

Survivors include his wife; his son, Richard J. Moniz, Jr. and his companion Lynn Cousins of Dartmouth; his daughter, Deborah Morrison of Acushnet; his former wife, Lorraine (Ferro) Moniz of Rochester; 5 grandchildren, Luke Morrison, Ava Morrison, Jamie Moniz, Richard Moniz-Faria and William Brightman; a great-granddaughter, Josephine Walker; and several nieces and nephews.

He was the father-in-law of the late James Morrison and the brother of the late Frank Moniz and Manuel Moniz.

Joanne (Getchell) Mahoney

Joanne (Getchell) Mahoney, age 89, died peacefully on February 12th, 2023. She was born in Brockton and graduated Brockton High School in 1950. In 1956 she married Paul L. Mahoney of Boston and together they lived in Brockton where they raised their three children - except for summers which were spent in Marion. In 1979 the family moved to Marion permanently. Paul predeceased her in 1995 after almost 30 years of an almost perfect marriage.

Joanne graduated from Simmons College and held advanced degrees from Northeastern University and Boston University. She served as School Psychologist for Whitman Public schools for over 30 years and was a consulting psychologist for public schools in Randolph, Abington, Rockland and Plymouth.

Throughout her adult life she was an active member of many civic and social organizations - serving as Director and/or officer of many, including Peoples Saving Bank of Brockton, Women's Guild of the Brockton Hospital, Marion Council on Aging, and The Piney Point Beach Club. She was named Marion's Woman of the Year in 2015. She was a Life Member of The Kittansett Club of Marion.

She was feisty, impatient and opinionated, and she was warm, witty, kind and affectionate. She loved her friends, books, travel, animals, Pall Mall cigarettes, and giving advice (solicited or not)! She disliked vegetables, physical exercise, and most politicians. Most of all, she loved to laugh, she loved her family and they loved her back.

When she passed she was ready and eager to meet God and to see Paul again - hopefully, the feelings were mutual!

She is survived by her children - daughter, PJ Dodge of Boston, son James E. Mahoney (Allison) of Arlington, VA, son Sean M. Mahoney of West Cork, Ireland - grandchildren Bayard Dodge (Caitlin) of Boston, and Andrew B. Dodge of Brooklyn - great-grandsons Carter and Quinn Dodge of Boston - and several loved nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit on Thurs., Feb. 16, 2023 at Chapman Funerals & Cremations - Wareham, 2599 Cranberry Hwy. (Rt. 28), Wareham from 5 - 7 pm. Funeral will be from the funeral home on Friday at 9 am followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Rita's Church, 115 Front St., Marion at 10 am. Interment will follow in Old Landing Cemetery, Marion.
