C. Denison Makepeace II
Jun 28, 2023

C. Denison Makepeace II, age 89, passed away peacefully at home In Marion, MA on June 28, 2023. He was surrounded by family and the gentle care of Hospice of Community Nurse Home Care of Fairhaven. He was known as "Denny" to his family and friends.

Denny is survived by his wife of 67 years, Cornelia "Tippy" Ward Makepeace, his sister Zelinda Douhan (John Douhan), his two daughters Megan Makepeace (Guy Mitchell) and Susan Makepeace, his three grandchildren Samantha Mitchell, Chris (Maria Finsness) and Tara Basting.

Denny was the son of Russell and Eleanor Makepeace. He was born on January 1, 1934 at the home of his mother's sister in Houston, Texas. He was raised in Marion where he attended Sippican Elementary School and Tabor Academy; he graduated from Williams College in 1956.

At Williams he completed four years of Reserve Officer's Training Corps (ROTC). For the following four years Denny served in the Air Force and traveled the world with his new wife Tippy.

Denny and Tippy settled in New Haven, CT where he worked at a New Haven bank. This began his long career as a computer systems analyst. He worked for many corporations and institutions throughout his career.

After moving and living in Vermont, where he worked at the University of Vermont, the family emigrated to Vancouver, Canada. Denny had positions at the Vancouver City Hall and the Weldwood Corporation.

Denny often said he "worked so he could play." He was an athlete in his heart and soul. He enjoyed daily running, marathons, skiing, hiking, mountain climbing, glacier rescue, sailing and tennis.

After Vancouver, the family moved to Cambridge MA where he and Tippy participated in the C.R.A.S.H -B World Indoor Rowing Championships on rowing ergometer machines. Denny competed for twenty years and one year was awarded second place for his age group.

He found a passion for competitive racing with his sailboat "Tango" in the Shields class at the Beverly Yacht Club in Marion. Later he raced Lasers.

Denny was an avid reader of history, biography and geography.

Denny suffered a stroke in July 2011. He faced his post stroke condition and cancer with steadfastness and fortitude. He was able to continue exercise on his home rowing machine with the weekly support of a physical therapist from Community Nurse Home Care.

For those who knew this couple well, it comes as no surprise that Tippy devoted her life over the past twelve years to Denny's care - right to the last breath.

An immediate family committal service was held in the memorial courtyard at St. Gabriel's Episcopal Church in Marion, MA.

Carol G. (Wildes) Atkinson

Carol G. (Wildes) Atkinson, 97, of Mattapoisett passed over on Friday, June 23, 2023 at the New Bedford Jewish Convalescent Home. She was the wife of the late Norman J. Atkinson.

Born in Leominster, daughter of the late Kenneth and Mildred (Aldrich) Wildes, she was raised in Melrose and lived in Reading until she moved to Mattapoisett in 1964.

Carol was a member of the Mattapoisett Congregational Church, where she was active in Couples Club and the choir.

She was formerly employed as the office manager of her husband's engineering firm, Atkinson Engineering, for many years until her retirement.

Carol enjoyed playing tennis and bridge and volunteering for many local organizations.

She is survived by two sons, Neil Atkinson of Lubbock, TX and Scott Atkinson of Mattapoisett, MA; her granddaughter, Ariana Atkinson; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her sisters, Barbara Curtis, Winona Clarkson, Lois Stocking, and Janice Fawcett; and her companion, Leonard Randall.

Tamara (Lukowicz) O'Hara

Tamara (Lukowicz) O'Hara, 53, of Marion passed away peacefully and surrounded by love on Thursday, June 22, 2023. She was the wife and soulmate of Shawn O'Hara.

Born in Providence Rhode Island, the daughter of Glenn and Celine (DeCesere) Lukowicz, she spent her early childhood in Hawaii, and most of her life in Marion. Tamara was a graduate of Bishop Stang High School and Bristol Community College where she earned her degree in Nursing. Tamara worked as a Registered Nurse in the Fall River area for both St Anne's Hospital and Prima Care for a combined twenty-five years.

Tamara loved traveling, and her dogs, but mostly any activities or time she could spend with her family and friends where she enveloped everyone she met with kindness, compassion, laughter and love.

Tamara is survived by her husband Shawn, her step-children whom she just adored, Joshua O'Hara, Jacob O'Hara and his partner Kaitlin Oliveira, and Annie O'Hara, her parents Glenn and Celine, her sister Kym (Lukowicz) Lee and her husband Terence, her nephews Dr. Terence Lee, Jr. and his partner Dr. Ashley Lin, and Matthew Lee. In addition she leaves behind her mother and father-in-law Christine (Paltrineri) and George O'Hara Jr., her sister-in-law Cynthia O'Hara and brother-in-law George O'Hara III and his partner Mary Tierney, along with beloved aunts, uncle, nieces, nephews, and the most incredible friends and friendships.

She is predeceased by her grandparents Bill and Agnes DeCesare, and Leon and Diana Lukowicz as well as Louis and Treva Paltrineri, Barbara and George O'Hara Sr., Nicholas Pilla, Lisa McIntosh Fucile and Ian Barlow.

We would like to thank the incredible doctors and nurses and staff at both Dana Farber Cancer Institute and Brigham and Women's Hospital for their exceptional care and compassion throughout this past year.

Her Funeral Mass will be held Friday, June 30, 2023 at 10 am at St. Mary's Church, 789 Dartmouth St., Dartmouth, with everyone invited to meet directly at Church. Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 29, 2023 from 4-8 pm at the Saunders-Dwyer Mattapoisett Home for Funerals, 50 County Road, Mattapoisett. Marcia Jean O'Neill

Marcia Jean O'Neill, 72, of Rochester, formerly of West Yarmouth, passed away peacefully on June 17, 2023 surrounded by the love and care of her devoted family after a courageous battle with Myelodyplastic Syndrome (MDS).

Born in Quincy, she was the oldest of 4 children born to the late William N. and Jean M. (Greenhalgh) Neil. Marcia was raised in Weymouth with her three sisters Pamela J. Lynch, and Andrea J. Neil and the late Claudia J. McNeely. She graduated from Weymouth South High School and Bridgewater State College.

After having her beloved daughter Lois, they moved to Quincy Point where they lived for several years. She worked as a bank teller for South Shore Bank in North Quincy for many years where she met the love of her life. Marcia and her husband the late James B. O'Neill, moved to the Cape in 1986 were they lived for 29 wonderful years and raised their family.

Marcia worked as Career Consultant for JTEC/Career Opportunities and as an Adjunct Professor at Cape Cod Community College for 24 years before retiring. After her beloved husband of 26 years passed away in 2014, she moved to Rochester to live with her daughter Lois O. Mentzer, son-in-law Michael G. and beloved grandson Timothy James.

Marcia enjoyed going on cruises, trips to Disney and other adventures with her family. She grew up spending countless summers in Wareham at their family cottage with her sisters, brother-in-law, nieces and nephews. Marcia was always up for new adventures that Lois and Mike would come up with including being the first to ride Timothy's go cart in 2021.

She is survived by her daughter Lois, son in law Michael, grandson Timothy Mentzer of Rochester; her sister Pamela (Neil) Lynch and husband Kevin of Wareham formerly East Bridgewater; her sister Andrea Neil of Quincy and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She will be dearly missed by all those that knew and loved her.

Her family would like to send a special thank you to the wonderful staff at Tobey Hospital (especially ER & ICU) and Southcoast VNA Hospice that went above and beyond to take care of her and make her comfortable in her last couple of weeks.

Her visiting hours will be on Thursday, June 29th from 5-7 PM at the Chapman Funerals & Cremations - WAREHAM, 2599 Cranberry Highway (Rte. 28), Wareham, MA. A short service will be held in the funeral home at 7 PM.

Vera Converse Gibbons

Vera Converse Gibbons passed away peacefully on June 11, 2023, just 4 months shy of her 90th birthday. She was surrounded by her five children at her home in Mattapoisett, MA.

The daughter of Rose Bullock Converse and Roger Wolcott Converse, Vera grew up in Brookline, MA, and spent summers in Marion.

She attended The Park School in Brookline, The Winsor School, St. Timothy's School and Smith College (Class of 1955).

In 1959, she married John Dennis Gibbons, a former sea captain and real estate developer.

Together, they raised a family and managed real estate properties.

When Vera turned 50, she took up windsurfing. She became a certified Mistral instructor, ran a windsurfing school and initiated the first Buzzards Bay Crossing.

Vera traveled all over the world pursuing this passion, making friends everywhere she went.

Celebrating her Halloween birthday and riding in her husband's antique trucks in 4th of July parades were two of her favorite things to do.

She also enjoyed swimming laps, hosting clambakes, reading to her grandchildren, doing NYT crossword puzzles and Sunday's "Spelling Bee", and playing BINGO.

Up for adventure, Vera was game for anything, but was happiest when she was with her family.

She lived a long and full life and will be missed by all.

Vera was predeceased by her husband John Gibbons, and her three brothers Roger Converse, Chandler Converse and Costello Converse.

Survivors include her two sons: John Dennis Gibbons, Jr. (Colleen) of Westfield, NJ and Roger Converse Gibbons of Mattapoisett; 3 daughters: Tina Roberts (Joel Berman), of Palm Beach, FL; Joanella Cannell (Jim), of Mattapoisett; and Vera Bullock Gibbons of Palm Beach, FL; 2 sisters: Rose Morgan of Wenham, MA and Christina Jackson (Patrick), of Yarmouth, Maine; 8 grandchildren: Ellen, Nina, Sydney, Josephine, Alex, Margo, Jack and Meade; 3 great-grandchildren: Charlotte, Emilia and Henry.

Dr. James Francis Tierney, Jr.

Dr. James Francis Tierney, Jr., 94, of Mattapoisett, Massachusetts passed away peacefully at home on Sunday June 11, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. He was born and raised in Boston, the son of Dr. James F. Tierney, Sr. and Margaret (Crowley) Tierney.

After graduating from Boston College, he attended Boston University School of Medicine. He spent his residency at Boston University Medical Center and temporarily left to serve as a Lieutenant in the Navy Medical Corps on the aircraft carrier USS Kearsage. After completing his residency, he relocated to New Bedford to be closer to his sister, Mary Tierney Burns. He practiced medicine at St. Luke's Hospital for over 50 years until his retirement in 2013. During his career, he also served as the Bristol County Medical Examiner and a Clinical Instructor at Tufts Medical Center.

Jim was best known for his bedside manner, sharp wit, dry sense of humor, timeless dance moves and fashionable sweaters. Aside from his love of medicine, he also loved golf and baseball and followed the Boston Red Sox closely. He was also an avid reader, often finishing his children's required summer reading books in one evening (much to their amazement).

He was married to Jean (Galligan) Tierney for over 59 years. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, Erin Tierney and her husband James Geraghty, James Tierney III and his wife Laura (Carlson) Tierney and Brendan Tierney and his wife Jennifer (Sodaski) Tierney. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Maeve and Liam Geraghty, Ava Tierney, and Finn, Cal and Luke Tierney. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly.

He was predeceased by his son, Ian Tierney, his sister, Mary Claire Burns, and her husband, William Burns, and his brother, The Honorable John A. Tierney, and his wife, former Mayor Rosemary Tierney.

His family wants to extend its sincerest thanks to his caregivers and Community Nurse Home Care of Fairhaven, both of whom took amazing care of him.

His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, June 16th at 11 am at St. Lawrence Church, 565 County St., New Bedford. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Fairhaven. David J. Wilhelmsen

David J. Wilhelmsen, 66, of Mattapoisett died peacefully June 9, 2023, at St. Luke's Hospital after having courageously fought a lengthy illness.

Born in New Bedford, son of Doris A. (Veek) Wilhelmsen of Mattapoisett and the late Alf H. Wilhelmsen, he was raised in Dartmouth and lived in Mattapoisett most of his life.

He was the owner and captain of the F/V Legacy for many years. He started his fishing career alongside his father on the F/V Ocean Gem.

David was happiest listening to his favorite classic rock bands, especially The Beatles, and spending time at family gatherings. He enjoyed family vacations, his favorites being Vermont, Hawaii, and Cooperstown. He loved history, trivia, and was an avid Red Sox fan.

Survivors include a son, James Wilhelmsen, of Providence, RI; a daughter, Leah Durocher and her husband Jack of Rochester; a brother, Glenn Wilhelmsen and his wife Donna of Dartmouth; a sister, Nancy Eilertsen and her companion Chuck Rooney of Mattapoisett; his former wife, Kathleen (Reagan) Wilhelmsen of Mattapoisett; two aunts, Janet Cronin of Churchville, NY and Pamela Veek of Framingham and Fairhaven; a grandson, John Durocher; and a nephew and several nieces.

His Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, June 17th at 9:00 am at Trinity Lutheran Church, 16 Temple Place, Fairhaven. The burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery. Torrie E. Wrightington

Torrie E. Wrightington, 50, of Rochester, died Monday, June 5, 2023 unexpectedly at his home in Rochester.

Born in New Bedford, Torrie was a resident of Rochester and graduated from Old Colony Regional Vocational Technical High School, Class of 1992. He worked as a machinist and a car salesman, and most recently was an auto mechanic for his father's business.

Torrie enjoyed working on cars and was an RC boat and car enthusiast. He had a wonderful sense of humor and loved telling jokes and playing pranks on friends and family.

He is survived by his sons, Kyle Parmenter of Sandford, ME, Nigel Wrightington of Scarborough, ME and Dimitri Wrightington of Biddeford, ME; his parents, Dave and Penny Wrightington of Rochester; his grandchildren, Lorelei Wrightington, Milo Wrightington and Odin Parmenter, and several aunts and uncles.

Kimberly I. Meyer-Pelletier

Kimberly I. Meyer-Pelletier, 68 of Fairhaven, MA died peacefully on Friday, June 2, 2023 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was the loving wife of Richard C. Pelletier for 39 years.

Born in Hinesville, GA daughter of the late Arthur H. and Dorothy G. (Lavallee) Meyer, she grew up in a close-knit family in Wrentham, MA and spent her summer months in Mattapoisett enjoying all the beauty that Buzzards Bay had to offer. Once married she moved to Coventry, CT where she started a family and grew her own private practice as a Physical Therapist. Eventually she planted roots in Fairhaven, MA where she continued her life's work as a PT, healing those who were burdened with grief, trauma, and physical and emotional pain through mind, body, and soul connection.

Kim, had a zest for life and a taste for adventure. She spent many winters skiing in snowy Vermont. She traveled the world whenever the opportunity beckoned. More recently, she took up pickleball which complimented her competitive and fun-loving nature. She was a warm, caring, and compassionate person who was always eager to help others in their time of need.

In addition to the obituary, here are some heartfelt memories of Kimberly Meyer-Pelletier:

-Kim was Miss Wrentham 1973 during the tricentennial celebrations.

-Kim had a green thumb and nurturing her garden brought her great joy.

-Kim cherished the holidays. She loved spending time with her family, cooking delicious meals, and giving thanks for all the blessings in her life.

-There was nothing quite like being on her boat in Lake Tashmoo watching the sunset with her best friends and her family. She would quite often remark "How lucky are we"

Survivors include her husband Richard; her children Alexander Pelletier and his wife Celia Bellaloui, and Rachel Pelletier and her husband Alec Desmond; her siblings Dwight D. Meyer, and Jennifer Meyer-Feeney and her husband James; her sister-in-law Carole Meyer; and her nieces and nephews Jay, Megan, William, Michael, and Lauren.

She is predeceased by her brother, A. Gregory Meyer.

On Saturday June 17th a celebration of Kim's life will take place at the Saunders-Dwyer Mattapoisett Home for Funerals, 50 County Rd., Mattapoisett, MA. Family welcomes visitors from 1 to 5 pm. We invite you to wear colorful clothing to celebrate Kim's joy of life. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Kim can be made to the Buzzards Bay Coalition.

June Rose (Delaney) Clancy

June Rose (Delaney) Clancy, 89, of Marion, MA, died unexpectedly at Tobey Hospital on June 1, 2023.

Born in Brockton, MA, daughter of the late William and Rosanna Delaney, she graduated from Brockton public schools. She also earned a certificate in business and then married Gerald S. Clancy, Sr. They were married for 68 years before both died on the same day, within 12 hours of one another: June at Tobey Hospital and Gerry at home after a period of declining health. Together they raised seven children, living in East Bridgewater and then Marion, MA.

Throughout her life, June was involved in her children and grandchildren's sports and activities, an active participant in her church and community, and beloved by countless friends and relatives. She was the long-time Secretary for Camp Rockne, a camp for girls in Dublin, NH. In Marion she volunteered at the Sippican Healthcare Center and St. Rita's Church, where she established the weekly Eucharistic ministry program to offer communion to Catholic residents at the Healthcare Center. She and her husband, Gerry, also designed, planted and maintained the gardens at St. Rita's for many years. In 2006, June received the Marian Medal diocesan award from the Bishop of Fall River in recognition of her dedicated service and on-going devotion to St. Rita's Parish.

June was a passionate and accomplished gardener and took great delight in her gardens at home and in sharing cuttings with friends and relatives. She also enjoyed golf, traveling and the many activities around Marion including, in her later years, the Council on Aging.

June is survived by five sons Gerald, Jr. (Elizabeth), Kevin, William, Thomas (Nanci) and Michael (Susan); two daughters Patricia Kashgagian (Greg) and Susan Dougherty (Dan); 14 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who will cherish her memory.

A Funeral Mass for June and Gerry will be held Friday, June 9th at 11 AM at St. Rita's Church in Marion, with the public invited to meet directly at Church. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Marion. Calling hours will be Thursday, June 8th from 4-7 PM at the Saunders-Dwyer Mattapoisett Home for Funerals, 50 County Rd., Mattapoisett.
