ORR Defends SCC Volleyball Title

After last week’s storm delayed several Old Rochester Regional High School sporting events, the girls volleyball team returned to action with two wins to close out their regular season as South Coast Conference champion for the second straight year.

On October 29, the Bulldogs hosted New Bedford High School, shutting out the opposition 3-0. Ella Soutter led the way with 10 kills. ORR played again the next day, defeating Fairhaven 3-1 in Mattapoisett to cap off the season. The entire team played well, with Maggie Brogioli making 13 kills and 11 digs. Soutter had 12 kills and four aces, while Sally Butler made 11 kills and four blocks, and Sydnee Pires added eight kills and four blocks. Kenna Soucy contributed 15 digs, and Aubrie Letourneau had 35 assists.

Saturday’s win made the Bulldogs SCC champions for a second straight season. ORR was perfect against conference competition this year, finishing the season at 13-0 with an overall record of 18-2. Their only setbacks came early in the season against Dartmouth and Dennis-Yarmouth, but both losses were avenged later in the season.

The fourth-seeded Bulldogs earned a bye in the Division 3 state tournament and at a date to be determined will host a Round of 32 match against the winner of Wednesday’s Preliminary Round match between No. 29 Archbishop Williams and No. 36 Chicopee.

Football

ORR saw its winning streak snapped at home on October 29 when the Bulldogs fell, 18-16, to visiting Fairhaven in overtime. After a scoreless first quarter, a second-quarter field goal from Fairhaven had the Bulldogs down 3-0 at halftime. Quarterback Noah Sommers put ORR on the board when he ran for a touchdown, and a fourth-quarter field goal from Remy Wilson left the game tied at 10-10.

The Blue Devils led off overtime with a quick touchdown followed by a two-point conversion. The Bulldogs immediately clapped back, scoring a touchdown of their own before a fumble on their own two-point conversion attempt sealed the win for Fairhaven.

The Bulldogs will host a Division 5 playoff game against No. 12 Northeast Metro Voke Tech on Friday, November 5, at 7:00 pm.
