The pinewood derby is a tradition that was started back in 1963 in Manhattan Beach, California and persists to this day. Tabor Academy Polar Plunge237 viewsTabor Academy hosted its second annual Polar Plunge on Sunday, January 21 at Silvershell Beach to raise money for the school’s Special Olympics Young Athletes Program. Students from ‘fundraising rival’ Sandwich High also showed up, with scores of students and staff making a dash in and quickly out of the chilly waters. The plunge raised about $8,000. Marine Becket Kiernan237 viewsOn Friday, February 16, Class of 2017 ORR graduate and 18-year-old Marine Becket Kiernan was laid to rest at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne. All of Old Rochester lined the side of Route 6 for a final farewell to Becket as Principal Mike Devoll stood solemnly as the procession passed beneath the giant U.S. flag suspended by two local ladder trucks. Marion Natural History Museum237 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum's afterschool group enjoyed learning the history of the Bird Island lighthouse and viewing the return of the birds to the island. We spotted roseate terns, common terns, oyster catchers, some unhappy Canadian geese, and a nesting mallard duck. We also learned about the recent restoration efforts made by the state Department of Fish and Wildlife to improve drainage and provide adequate nesting habitat for the returning birds. 108th Annual Rochester Grange Fair 237 viewsThe 108th Annual Rochester Grange Fair was held on August 18 with a wide variety of produce, floral bouquets, baked goods, handicrafts, and works of art. The state first place winner for her diorama depicting a barn that contained fresh eggs and produce was Susan Guiducci of Dartmouth. There were a total of 35 entries vying for other blue ribbons in many other categories. Sue LaFluer, grange secretary and one of the fair organizers said that participants ranged in age from 6 years of age and beyond.
