Mattapoisett Fire Department Association Chowder Competition 305 viewsOn September 8, the 5th annual Mattapoisett Fire Department Association Chowder Competition featured a variety of flavorful chowders from restaurants and public safety facilities from Fairhaven, Rochester, and Mattapoisett. Family Fun Festival 305 viewsFamilies came out in record numbers to enjoy the 4th Annual Fall Free Family Fun Festival sponsored by the Mattapoisett’s Lion Club on October 19 held at Shipyard Park. Bruce Rocha of the club estimated attendance at over 400. Kids and adults alike enjoyed free face painting, bowling with pumpkins, a corn hole toss, snacks, hayrides to Ned’s Point and, yes, free pumpkins to take home. The students of Old Rochester Regional Junior High on November 24 hosted their annual Thanksgiving banquet for the senior citizens of Tri-Town – a tradition made possible by the volunteer staff and students who spend hours decorating, cooking, serving, and cleaning up after so seniors can get a taste of the school community’s gratitude for their support. Rockets305 viewsMattapoisett Library hosted Dr. Sandra Pearl of SEED Education on September 21. SEED is a regional, nonprofit organization run by Ph.D. scientists with a passion for empowering teachers with the confidence to instill a love of science in their students. Pearl led a group of eager students through science experiments geared to launching things into the air. There was age-appropriate physics, chemistry and just plain fun. The activity was made possible through a grant from the Mattapoisett Cultural Council.

4th Fireworks304 viewsDespite funding setbacks, the Marion fireworks took place this year at Silver Shell Beach under perfectly clear skies. Revelers enjoyed the patriotic music of Phil Sanborn and the Marion Concert Band while brilliant colors illuminated the harbor.
