Mattapoisett Firefighter’s Association284 viewsThe Mattapoisett Firefighter’s Association hosted a chowder competition on September 13 on the Mattapoisett Knights of Columbus grounds. Between 300 and 400 guests came to sample the chowder of 16 different teams, split into two categories: public safety and professional. Rochester Country Fair 284 viewsThe Rochester Country Fair rolled into town on Thursday, August 18, filled the air with the sweet smells of Italian sausage and fried fair food, mixed with the smoke of diesel engines, and created that magical scent we all relish until the fair wrapped up on Sunday, August 21. Tractor pulls, animal shows, kids’ games, music, and wrestling (including the match between The Aardvark and Buck Chuck) delighted us while it lasted in the bucolic setting of Rochester, Massachusetts. Marion Natural History Museum284 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum's afterschool group enjoyed learning the history of the Bird Island lighthouse and viewing the return of the birds to the island. We spotted roseate terns, common terns, oyster catchers, some unhappy Canadian geese, and a nesting mallard duck. We also learned about the recent restoration efforts made by the state Department of Fish and Wildlife to improve drainage and provide adequate nesting habitat for the returning birds.
