Marion Natural History Museum 300 viewsOn August 8, the Marion Natural History Museum hosted Amy Kukulya, a research engineer with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and one of the lead authorities on the SharkCam research vehicle. Kukulya spoke about the science of tagging great white sharks and shared video footage as a SharkCam was repeatedly attacked by a shark; yet, with only a dent, survived to continue following and monitoring these incredible animals.

Bristol County Radio Control “RC” Club300 viewsRadio control model seaplanes are more than just a hobby for members of the Bristol County Radio Control “RC” Club. As club member Gerry Dupont puts it, “It’s an affliction. A happy affliction.” Dupont’s yellow Piper Cub seaplane features a one-fifth-scale pilot named “Gus” who’s been flying the one-fifth-scale seaplane for seven years. Photos by Jean Perry

Marion Natural History Museum300 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum had a great time learning how to identify some of our rare turtles and what to do if we find one. We found out which is our smelliest turtle and which can close up into a "box" so tight you can't even slip a piece of paper between its shell. The students had a chance to get up close with a diamondback terrapin, an Eastern box turtle, and an enormous Plymouth red-bellied cooter. Many thanks to Brian Bastarach of Bristol County Agricultural High School’s Natural Resources Dep

Rochester Scout300 viewsRochester Lions Club members joined forces again on December 15 with Scout Troop 31 and other community volunteers at the Council on Aging to help make the COA’s Christmas Holiday Dinner program successful. Scouts packed 68 Christmas dinner bags of turkey, fresh vegetables, and all the fixings for delivery. The Rochester Lions Club works hard all year to raise the funds to provide these holiday meals at Thanksgiving and Christmas to area seniors and families in need.

Class of 2020 300 viewsGraduating seniors in the Old Rochester Regional High School Class of 2020 drove around to the back of the school building on May 28, where they were greeted by faculty and administration. After arriving in order of homeroom to ensure safe spacing, the seniors turned in textbooks and received yearbooks, a surprise COVID-19 gift bag, and a long-sleeve t-shirt decorated with the mascot Bulldog and the word ‘Quarantine’ spelled across the front. Grandparent's Day299 viewsIt was a perfect autumn day for the SouthCoast Senior Resource Alliance Grandparents Day at Hiller Farm in Rochester on September 19. Children and their grandparents had fun playing bean-bag toss, bocce, posing with the Three Stooges, and more. The face-painting and petting zoo areas were a complete hit! Most importantly, the free event provided information to seniors on health services available in the SouthCoast area. Photo by Anne OBrien-Kakley
