Little fingers sticky with glue flattened out cotton balls and fastened them to prefabricated Styrofoam snowperson shapes, and then glued on the trimmings under the guidance of caregivers. Hammond Quarry343 viewsMattapoisett Land Trust President Mike Huguenin led a group of about 52 people on a walk about Hammond Quarry, a historical property off Mattapoisett Neck Road that the MLT is hoping to acquire next year. Pink granite was mined from the site between the early 1700s through the early 1900s, and the MLT plans to purchase the property to preserve the quarries and carve out trails for public access. Mattapoisett Tree Committee343 viewsMattapoisett fifth grader Fiona Hoben won 1st prize in the Arbor Day poster contest sponsored by the Mattapoisett Tree Committee in partnership with the Massachusetts Urban and Community Forestry Program. Runner up was Camryn Maniatis. Fifteen students worked with Old Hammondtown School art instructor Greta Anderson. The posters were judged by a group of Mattapoisett residents whose understanding and appreciation of art brought professional level review to the event.

Memorial Day343 viewsThe rain cancelled the parade and forced the Memorial Day observance indoors on Monday, but many gathered to honor our fallen soldiers and their families inside Center School. Keynote speaker Commander Bryan D. Williams gave a heartfelt speech, while George Randall recited the Gettysburg Address to mark the 100th anniversary of when his father, Jeremiah, first read it on Memorial Day in 1917 at the age of 15.
