Christmas Day Swim382 viewsOn Christmas Day 2014, about 50 hardy souls, young and old alike, ran with yelps of joy into 42-degree winter waters at Mattapoisett’s Town Beach. This annual event raises funds for Helping Hands and Hooves, a nonprofit organization in Mattapoisett that provides horseback riding lessons and therapeutic sessions for people with special needs. Marion Boy Scouts382 viewsTroop 32 Marion Boy Scouts and their parents went on a ski trip on February 22, 2015 to Ragged Mountain. Some of what Boy Scouts is about is exposure to new things, so Ragged Mountain was a good choice as a beginner’s mountain. Two of the Scouts and two of the parents (and even a Scout sibling) started the day with a beginner’s lesson, Chris Horton on a snowboard.

The all-night event at the Old Rochester Regional High School track is a special event when the community honors cancer survivors and remembers loved ones who lost their battle with cancer, in addition to raising funds for a cure. Whale Watch382 viewsOn December 2, a small, curious humpback whale surfaced in Marion between Nye’s Wharf and Ram Island. Long-time residents of the town couldn’t remember a prior whale sighting. The animal looked to be about 20 feet long. Marion resident Michael Moore guessed from its size that the whale was young -- and a sight that young humans would not want to miss. Rabies Check382 viewsDavid Smith of the Rochester Land Trust recently accompanied Randy Mickley, a USDA Wildlife disease biologist, as he checked live mammal traps set in Marion and Rochester as part of the Cape Cod Oral Rabies Program. The goal is to establish a vaccine barrier in Plymouth County to prevent reintroduction of rabies to Cape Cod. Two raccoons were caught in Rochester and three in Marion.

Turtle382 viewsSome of the residents of Jenney Lane at The Cove in Marion have found a new passion in rescuing diamond-backed terrapin eggs and safely releasing the hatchlings into the wild. A private neighborhood group, along with “Turtle Guy” Don Lewis and wife Sue Weiber Nourse, created a terrapin habitat restoration project knows as the turtle garden at The Cove. The project has seen success this year with an increase in new terrapin nests over last year. Photos by Jean Perry
