Whale Watch334 viewsOn December 2, a small, curious humpback whale surfaced in Marion between Nye’s Wharf and Ram Island. Long-time residents of the town couldn’t remember a prior whale sighting. The animal looked to be about 20 feet long. Marion resident Michael Moore guessed from its size that the whale was young -- and a sight that young humans would not want to miss. Just before dismissal, students at Sippican School heard the voice of Hannah Moore, their music direction, over the intercom. Photo by by Barbara Ann Markel

Waste Water Treatment334 viewsThis is no drinking fountain. Last week, we met with Fairhaven DPW Superintendent Vincent Furtado and made it our business to learn more about the business of … your business and its journey from the toilet to the Fairhaven Wastewater Treatment Facility on Arsene Street in Fairhaven and out to New Bedford Harbor. Some 1,780 Mattapoisett residents receive municipal sewer service from the Fairhaven facility. Photo by Jean Perry

Marion Natural History Museum334 viewsDespite the impending Polar Vortex, a small hardy group learned to identify some our local trees and shrubs in winter. Have you ever smelled a black cherry? (Yuck!) Or a yellow birch? (Yum!) We learned about opposite and alternate leaf arrangement on a branch, what lenticels look like on a birch and a hickory, and that you can make tea out of sassafras. Thank you to Sarah Porter for the great program. Photos courtesy Elizabeth Leidhold

Marion Natural History Museum334 viewsOn March 13, the Marion Natural History Museum after school group learned about shells and the animals that inhabit them. We looked at some amazing gastropod and bivalve shells from the museum's historic collections, then we used shells to design our own animals and shared what type of habitat these animals might live in. As club member Gerry Dupont puts it, “It’s an affliction. A happy affliction.” Dupont’s yellow Piper Cub seaplane features a one-fifth-scale pilot named “Gus” who’s been flying the one-fifth-scale seaplane for seven years. Photos by Jean Perry
