SLT Oyster Fest 398 viewsThe Sippican Lands Trust’s Beer and Oyster Fest fundraiser was a hit despite the threat of approaching Hurricane Dorian, which was replaced with blue skies just in time, and holding the event earlier in the day mitigated the guests’ exposure to EEE-carrying mosquitos. Robert Hiller Homecoming398 viewsRobert Hiller III finally returned on March 3 to his Eastover Farms-area home to a grand welcome of family and friends after a bout with the EEE virus that put the Rochester resident in a coma for 19 days and held him in hospital care for seven months. Poker Run397 viewsMotorcyclists gathered Sunday morning, September 20, in the parking lot of ORR to ride in the third annual Poker Run for Alex Pateakos. Alex is a five-year-old Marion boy who suffers from Spinal Muscular Atrophy. Money raised by the poker run will benefit Alex, and Families of SMA, a group that helps families like the Pateakos’ live their lives as close to normal as possible. The public was welcome to tour the facilities, and children enjoyed exploring all the engines available at the station. Susan Dexter used a metal detector to find artifacts from the site, and turned up an Indian-head penny and a couple heavily rusted items.

The Derby was held at the Sippican School where scouts raced cars weighing less than 5 ounces down a sloped wooden track. Everyone cheered as the wooden cars raced down the track in packs or four. Memorial Day397 viewsThe Florence Eastman Post 220 in Mattapoisett hosted the town’s Memorial Day observance and parade on May 31, 2010. The ceremony began with a service at the Veteran’s monument in front of the library, and then a parade assembled and marched to the town wharf and to Cushing Cemetery.
