Behold, the locals who fit that description as they enjoy a frosty January 1st at Mattapoisett Town Beach for the annual Freezin’ for a Reason Polar Plunge! Hundreds lined the beach to take the plunge, with bundled spectators watching from the sidelines and cheering as the plungers charged ahead screaming and shrieking with exhilaration. We tried out some of the equipment and discussed working conditions. We learned about the three different types of rocks – sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic, and how they form, and inspected various rocks and minerals and fossils presenter Jim Pierson has collected over the years.

While half the students head off for Survival, the others enjoy a week of equally challenging tasks of the 40-year tradition of SCOPE that gives students a chance to learn while learning about themselves and each other. SLT Oyster Fest 307 viewsThe Sippican Lands Trust’s Beer and Oyster Fest fundraiser was a hit despite the threat of approaching Hurricane Dorian, which was replaced with blue skies just in time, and holding the event earlier in the day mitigated the guests’ exposure to EEE-carrying mosquitos.
