Marion Natural History Museum318 viewsOver the past two Wednesdays, the MNHM afterschool group visited Bird Island courtesy of Isaac and Peter of the Marion Harbormaster's office. We observed many terns arriving to this crucial nesting spot, as well as oystercatchers, gulls, and a pair of Canadian geese. We inspected nesting boxes prepared by the state Fish & Wildlife department and the habitat restoration improvements to the island. We also toured the 200-year-old lighthouse.

Marion Natural History Museum 318 viewsOn August 8, the Marion Natural History Museum hosted Amy Kukulya, a research engineer with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and one of the lead authorities on the SharkCam research vehicle. Kukulya spoke about the science of tagging great white sharks and shared video footage as a SharkCam was repeatedly attacked by a shark; yet, with only a dent, survived to continue following and monitoring these incredible animals.

Marion Natural History Museum318 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum's afterschool group enjoyed learning about our local birds in anticipation of the upcoming "Great Backyard Bird Count" event on February 14-17. The GBBC is a great citizen-science initiative to gauge how our bird species are doing, and all it takes is 15 minutes to count the number of species and how many of each, and submit your findings to Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) website: birdcount.org. Marion Natural History Museum318 viewsOne hull or two? On March 11, the Marion Natural History Museum afterschool group explored the physics behind sailboat design. Mark Whalen, engineer with Massachusetts Maritime Academy, introduced several alternative design ideas for constructing our own sailboats. The students explored a variety of hull designs, mast locations and different sizes and shapes of sails. Then they raced the vessels in rain gutters to see which design moved fastest.

Grandparent's Day317 viewsIt was a perfect autumn day for the SouthCoast Senior Resource Alliance Grandparents Day at Hiller Farm in Rochester on September 19. Children and their grandparents had fun playing bean-bag toss, bocce, posing with the Three Stooges, and more. The face-painting and petting zoo areas were a complete hit! Santa Arrives317 viewsMattapoisett held its annual holiday celebration and tree lighting on Saturday, December 5, 2009 at Shipyard Park. The rain couldn't dampen holiday spirits as visitors enjoyed delicious food and listened to Christmas music performed by the Showstoppers.
