Rochester turned 340 334 viewsHey, hey, it’s your birthday, Rochester! Rochester turned 340 years old on June 4, and the third grade class from RMS was invited to celebrate with some cake and ice cream at the senior center on Tuesday. Students started the day with a tour around historic Rochester before breaking for lunch and sharing a large birthday cake with seniors. Students also received a free “Rochester 340” t-shirt, courtesy of a grant that funded the students’ birthday gifts. Photos by Jean Perry

After a luncheon and cake, several speakers took to the podium for a stroll down memory lane while emphasizing the importance of preserving the history of Rochester for future generations. Octopurr Fest334 viewsIt’s All About the Animals held its 5th annual Octopurr Fest on October 6. The fundraiser featured food, games, music, and craft booths. Owner and operator of the no-kill shelter, Pam Robinson, said 100 percent of all proceeds would go directly to the care of the felines. Marion Town Hall Annex334 viewsThe Main Street-facing side of the Marion Town Hall Annex building is scheduled for a significant facelift in 2021. The Community Preservation Committee recently voted to approve two appropriations of $90,000 each toward the building’s renovation, including a historically appropriate Main Street entry way featuring mahogany doors, the replacement of windows, and a restoration of the facade. Waterman Reunion333 viewsThe Third Annual Waterman School Reunion took place at the Rochester Memorial School on Saturday, September 12 attracting over 100 former students of the venerable elementary school. Waterman school, which was in the building that now houses the Rochester Fire Department, was the forerunner to RMS during the first half of the Twentieth Century. The public was welcome to tour the facilities, and children enjoyed exploring all the engines available at the station.
