Wheeler, formerly of Marion and grandson of Mattapoisett resident Lee Eaton, was award the Henry Mancini Fellowship at the Ascap Foundation Awards Ceremony. The ceremony took place at the Home of Jazz at the Lincoln Center in New York on December 9, 2009. Mr. Wheeler is a 2004 graduate of Old Rochester Regional, and received a Bachelor's degree, magna cum laude, in Studio Composition from SUNY/Purchase in 2008.

Historic Fire336 viewsThe Dexters are trying to salvage the granite from the original foundation of the 1690 house. Bricks from a chimney are scattered at the old foundation. Susan Dexter used a metal detector to find artifacts from the site, and turned up an Indian-head penny and a couple heavily rusted items.

Museum Mural336 viewsA large 6 by 16 foot Clifford Ashley mural was donated to the Mattapoisett Museum by Polly Phipps of 20 Water Street. The mural, which depicts the Southcoast of Massachusetts from the Connecticut River to the Cape and Islands, hung in the Water Street home for 90 years before being donated to the Museum. Mattapoisett Historical Society President Seth Mendell said that after the mural is professionally restored, it will be mounted on the wall in the Museum. Photo by Anne O'Brien-Kakley.

Multicultural Festival 336 viewsThe local AFS (American Field Service) held a multicultural festival on Saturday, February 6, 2010 at the Center School in Mattapoisett. The festival included several stations that displayed information about different cultures from around the world. Exchange students from Thailand, Panama and Northern Germany also enjoyed the festivities. Zumbathon336 viewsThe ORR high school gymnasium was alive with music and movement on Sunday, April 11, 2010, when dancers took to the floor for a good cause. For a $30 contribution, participants could Zumba for three hours, and the proceeds of the Zumbathon went to Compassionate Care for ALS in Falmouth, a non-profit organization that provides equipment and support to families affected by ALS. The Zumbathon was in honor of Jeffrey Lawrence, a 47-year-old man living with ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis).

Memorial Day336 viewsThe Florence Eastman Post 220 in Mattapoisett hosted the town’s Memorial Day observance and parade on May 31, 2010. The ceremony began with a service at the Veteran’s monument in front of the library, and then a parade assembled and marched to the town wharf and to Cushing Cemetery. Rochester Country Fair336 viewsRochester’s Country Fair was a great success despite the cancellation of the Town Ball Game, Woodsman Show, the Block dance and the Bonfire due to EEE. The weather was perfect on Saturday as children raced frogs, climbed walls, bounced in castles and much more. Although the weather was less than perfect on Sunday, residents lined the streets with lawn chairs and umbrellas to watch as the Hillbilly themed parade passed. Photos by Felix Perez.
