The festivities included the National Anthem sung by Jennel Garcia and opening pitches thrown by Police Chief’s Lincoln Miller (Marion), Mary Lyons (Mattapoisett), and Paul McGee (Rochester), as well as Fire Chiefs Thomas Joyce (Marion), Andrew Murray (Mattapoisett) and Scott Weigel (Rochester). Old Rochester Little League356 viewsThe Old Rochester Little League celebrated its Opening Day of the 2016 season on Saturday, April 30 at Gifford Park off Dexter Road in Rochester. The young athletes took part in the traditional Opening Day parade, which began at Dexter Park and concluded at Dexter Field. The players then circled the field for the National Anthem, with a flyover by Glenn Lawrence in his plane. After opening ceremonies, the first games of the season were held. Photo by Colin Veitch

Triathlon356 viewsThe Triathlon kicked off the first of the many Harbor Days events scheduled over the week and into the weekend. Hosted by the Mattapoisett Lions Club every year, the triathlon takes racers .25 miles from the shore of Town Beach and back, 10 miles bicycling through Mattapoisett, and 5K through the village around Ned’s Point Lighthouse. Boston Post Cane356 viewsSelectman Brad Morse presented the Boston Post cane to Rochester’s oldest living resident, Edna Chadwick, 101, at her home on June 11. The Boston Post cane tradition was started in 1909 when the now defunct newspaper presented 700 New England towns with ebony canes imported from Africa and crowned in 14-karat gold to be passed down to the oldest resident living in the town. Ellis Mendell (1834-1907), the Mattapoisett postmaster around the turn of the century, kept a list of the many ways he has seen Mattapoisett misspelled on the letters that have passed through his post office. Mattapoisett Fire Department 356 viewsOn March 6 at approximately 10:09 am, the Mattapoisett Fire Department was dispatched to 141 Fairhaven Road for a reported structure fire. Fire Chief Andrew Murray arrived on scene at 10:11 am and reported heavy fire and smoke showing from the rear of the structure. At the time, a first-alarm assignment was requested to the scene, bringing in engines from Marion and Fairhaven Fire. Rochester Fire responded to Mattapoisett fire station for station coverage.
