Music was provided by Felonious Funk, and party-goers enjoyed a wide array of finger foods and fine spirits. Friendly conversation lingered over the silent auction tables, which offered original oil paintings, handmade felted purses, memberships to the Wareham YMCA and the Marion Art Center, and plenty of gift certificate to area businesses. Disaster Drill367 viewsFairhaven Fire Department hosted a full-scale exercise to improve emergency response in the region. Mattapoisett, Rochester, Dartmouth, Freetown, Acushnet, and New Bedford all responded to a disaster that simulated an accident between a school bus and an oil truck at Livesey Park in Fairhaven. Camper Fire367 viewsThe Mattapoisett Fire Department responded to a fire involving a camper at 110 Marion Road at 5:30 pm on Wednesday, November 4, 2009. A shed and a truck on the scene were also damaged in the fire. According to Chief Murray, the structures and vehicle were all clustered closely together in a remote area on the property and were fully involved on arrival. An electric heater in the camper is being looked into as the cause. The owner of the property had just purchased the camper three weeks ago.

Artist Visit367 viewsOn November 19, Author/Illustrator Teresa Flavin visited each of Mattapoisett Center School’s third grade classes. Ms. Flavin is the illustrator of Joseph Bruchac’s play Pushing Up the Sky featured in the 3rd Graders reading book. Her presentation included showing the students original sketches and artwork from her books, discussing the processes involved in creating artwork for publication and a short hands-on drawing project.

Santa Arrives367 viewsMattapoisett held its annual holiday celebration and tree lighting on Saturday, December 5, 2009 at Shipyard Park. The rain couldn't dampen holiday spirits as visitors enjoyed delicious food and listened to Christmas music performed by the Showstoppers. Children made their own ornaments and hung them on the Christmas tree. They also danced with Rudolph and Frosty and shared their Christmas wishes with Santa Claus. Photo by Felix Perez.

Christmas Holiday Shop367 viewsSt. Anthony’s and St. Rita’s parishioners combined efforts to give the community a Christmas Holiday Shop and Celebration on Saturday, December 5, 2009. The basement of St. Anthony’s church was decked out in snowflakes, wreaths, bells, bows, and a Santa sleigh. Santa listened patiently as children told him what they wanted for Christmas. Christmas Swim367 viewsA 2009 Christmas morning swim benefitted Helping Hands and Hooves, a Mattapoisett non-profit organization dedicated to therapeutic horseback riding for adults with disabilities. 40 swimmers and at least 50 onlookers participated in the 2009 swim.
