Poker Run368 viewsMotorcyclists gathered Sunday morning, September 20, in the parking lot of ORR to ride in the third annual Poker Run for Alex Pateakos. Alex is a five-year-old Marion boy who suffers from Spinal Muscular Atrophy. Money raised by the poker run will benefit Alex, and Families of SMA, a group that helps families like the Pateakos’ live their lives as close to normal as possible. Chest Returns368 viewsBeth Mills stands in front of the pine and mahogany chest of drawers made by her grandfather, Charles Johnson, who was an undertaker and cabinet-maker in Mattapoisett at the turn of the 20th century. The chest of drawers remained with her until she passed away in 2008 at the age of 99. Her friends John and Caroline Belloti contacted the Mattapoisett Historical Society after her passing to fulfill her wish that the chest remain with the Mattapoisett Museum, just around the corner from where it was made.

Zumbathon368 viewsThe ORR high school gymnasium was alive with music and movement on Sunday, April 11, 2010, when dancers took to the floor for a good cause. For a $30 contribution, participants could Zumba for three hours, and the proceeds of the Zumbathon went to Compassionate Care for ALS in Falmouth, a non-profit organization that provides equipment and support to families affected by ALS. The Zumbathon was in honor of Jeffrey Lawrence, a 47-year-old man living with ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis).

This year’s race had more runners than ever, despite the wind and cold temperatures.
