Corpse flowers459 viewsCorpse flowers – These monotropa uniflora – “Indian pipes”, “ghost plant”, or “ghost pipes” as they are otherwise known – are perennial waxy-white, fleshy, iridescent flowers that rise from the forest floor like tiny ghosts in a graveyard, hidden beneath the shadows of ferns and fallen tree trunks. These herbaceous flowers exist without the sun’s energy, void of the chlorophyll that gives other plants their green color. September 13, 2018

Rochester Tree Lighting459 viewsIt was a rainy Rochester holiday tree lighting, but the show went on nonetheless. Santa skipped his usual fire truck arrival this year for the sake of staying dry and warm, while neighboring Friendship Hall welcomed the crowd indoors to enjoy the RMS band and chorus. Marion Natural History Museum459 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum's afterschool group enjoyed learning about minerals and fossils with geologist Jim Pierson. The group also compared various artifacts such as relative sizes of Megaladon teeth versus White Shark, and took a look at many examples of fossils such as fish, leaves, and the tiny tracks of a trilobite. Many thanks to Jim for his wonderful program, and to the Tabor community service volunteers for their help with the program. Photos courtesy Elizabeth Leidhold
