Stone Cold Spooky 483 viewsMattapoisett resident Warren Parsons says this pre-colonial stone head his grandmother found on the old family farm in Dartmouth back in the ‘50s is haunted or maybe even cursed. Should we take Parsons’ word for granite? The stone head seemed gneiss to us. (See what we did there?) Photo by Jean Perry

Marion Natural History Museum483 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum's afterschool group enjoyed learning about minerals and fossils with geologist Jim Pierson. The group also compared various artifacts such as relative sizes of Megaladon teeth versus White Shark, and took a look at many examples of fossils such as fish, leaves, and the tiny tracks of a trilobite. Many thanks to Jim for his wonderful program, and to the Tabor community service volunteers for their help with the program. Photos courtesy Elizabeth Leidhold

Marion Natural History Museum483 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum's afterschool group enjoyed learning about our local birds in anticipation of the upcoming "Great Backyard Bird Count" event on February 14-17. The GBBC is a great citizen-science initiative to gauge how our bird species are doing, and all it takes is 15 minutes to count the number of species and how many of each, and submit your findings to Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) website: birdcount.org. Trash Fire483 viewsA trash truck was up in smoke on Long Plain Road in Mattapoisett last week. Before I knew it, engines and firemen appeared in full gear. The Fire Department had the driver dump all the trash in a field near the road where the fire could be more safely extinguished. Photo by Ellie Higgins
