Farmer retired after more than 30 years as the Town Band leader. Newell, who has more than 25 years playing and teaching in south-coast bands and in schools, is a teacher at Durfee High School in Fall River. Oil Spill Drill66 viewsOn Tuesday, the Town of Mattapoisett hosted a MassDEP-sponsored training course in cooperation with the Town of Fairhaven, representatives from the U.S. Coast Guard, Nuka Research and Planning Group and Moran Environmental Recovery. Working the Mattapoisett Harbormaster boat piloted by P.J. Beaudoin were Assistant Harbormaster Robert Clavin and intern Robert Haskell, and on the Mattapoisett Fire Department boat were Firefighter Daniel Cortes and Lieutenant Ross Macedo. The children enjoyed a much-deserved celebration with Christmas food and cookies, and excitement filled the air with the singing of carols and the making of a beautiful nativity scene that they take home to set under their Christmas trees. Our group had a blast making ornaments (and eating junk food) during the event, and everyone brought home an ornament or two to share with the family.

Our gracious hosts allowed us to explore the island beaches, streams, saltmarshes, open-water areas and Osprey nests. Some of the students who attend our programs had not been in a boat or explored an island before. The museum is so very thankful to the Moores for allowing us to explore and map the island.
