Mattapoisett Boatyard Fire70 viewsSmoke rose over Mattapoisett Harbor on August 19 after a boat caught fire during the replacement of a gasoline tank. An explosion followed by a raging fire leveled Mattapoisett Boatyard and destroyed the 14 boats and 47 vehicles on site. Members of the Kaiser family who own the business and members of the McLean family who founded the business surveyed the ruins on the weekend and vow to rebuild. Oil Spill Drill70 viewsOn Tuesday, the Town of Mattapoisett hosted a MassDEP-sponsored training course in cooperation with the Town of Fairhaven, representatives from the U.S. Coast Guard, Nuka Research and Planning Group and Moran Environmental Recovery. Working the Mattapoisett Harbormaster boat piloted by P.J. Beaudoin were Assistant Harbormaster Robert Clavin and intern Robert Haskell, and on the Mattapoisett Fire Department boat were Firefighter Daniel Cortes and Lieutenant Ross Macedo. Later in the evening, Ted and Elizabeth Brainard visited Coahuila with Executive Director Liz Leidhold, while Treasurer Mike Cronin set up a telescope on the sidewalk out front of the Elizabeth Taber Library where attendees took turns viewing Jupiter and its moons. Tri-Town firefighters70 viewsThe holidays were challenging for Tri-Town firefighters. Marion and Rochester fire departments were among towns assisting Wareham after a mulch pile in a remote location off County Road caught fire on Christmas Eve. Firefighters worked in cold temperatures for eight hours, dispensing approximately 200,000 gallons of water to extinguish the fire. Travis Roy Student Center70 viewsTabor Academy hosted an Open House on Tuesday morning at the new Travis Roy Student Center, which replaces the former library on the same spot. While the late Travis Roy is most widely known as a student-athlete whose college-hockey career lasted all of 11 seconds, his passion for student life, ceramics, sailing and the big part the Marion campus played in his life is reflected in the building of the new student center bearing his name. Center School Art70 viewsChildren of all ages with their parents, guardians and grandparents filled Center School on March 23 to view artwork by Mattapoisett students ranging from Project GROW (preschool) to Grade 6. Greta Anderson is the Art teacher for both Mattapoisett schools and worked with a group of Mattapoisett PTA volunteers to mount and hang over 450 art pieces. "It's great to see so many families here!" she said. Principal Linda Ashley greeted visitors, walking some to their students' work.
