Betty Parsons13 viewsAt the Marion Art Center on display through October 28 is a retrospective of works done by gallerist and artist Betty Parsons. From as early as the 1930s through to 1980, Parsons received growing acclaim for her ability and wisdom in selecting art done by emerging artists, primarily those expressed via abstract visual interpretations. Parsons was also an artist, described as both a painter and a sculptor for her work in watercolor and acrylic, but also a sculptor for her found items and driftwood creations.

Later in the evening, Ted and Elizabeth Brainard visited Coahuila with Executive Director Liz Leidhold, while Treasurer Mike Cronin set up a telescope on the sidewalk out front of the Elizabeth Taber Library where attendees took turns viewing Jupiter and its moons. Marion Natural History Museum13 viewsOn November 30, the Marion Natural History Museum's after-school group had a chance to learn about the different types of trees in our area and to look at some equipment used by foresters to help protect our trees. By looking at a tree "cookie," we were able to count the rings to determine its age and learn about the services, the different sections, including the heart wood, sap wood and bark or phloem provides the tree.

Our group had a blast making ornaments (and eating junk food) during the event, and everyone brought home an ornament or two to share with the family.

Blessing of the Fleet13 viewsThe Reverend Eric Fialho, rector at Saint Gabriel’s Parish, presided as the Town of Marion held its first-ever Blessing of the Fleet on January 1 in Sippican Harbor. One tradition well established the past half-dozen years was the sunflower in the outer harbor, where several vessels tied up to one another at the stern and aimed their bows outward toward the sea in 360-degree formation.
