Marion Natural History Museum13 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum braved the snowy weather Wednesday and attending members were rewarded with 18 different shoreline bird sightings. The sightings included a large “raft” of sleepy Greater Scaup, Canada Geese, American Black Duck, Surf Scoter, Long-tailed Duck, Bufflehead, Common Goldeneye, Hooded Merganser, Red-breasted Merganser, Horned Grebe, Ring-billed Gull, Herring Gull, Common Loon, American Crow, American Robin, House Finch, Song Sparrow and Northern Cardinal. Opening Day13 viewsRick Plunkett throws out the first pitch in memory of his son Ryan Plunkett, for whom the Old Rochester Youth Baseball League has commemorated a new award going to the league’s best pitcher. Rick Plunkett is also pictured with Rochester Police Officer Austin Alves, who was Ryan Plunkett’s catcher when the two played together on the A’s of the ORYB Major League. Alves recalled a home run Ryan Plunkett hit over the left-field wall that got caught up in the top of the batting cage at Gifford Park.

Marion Natural History Museum 13 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum would like to thank Mike and Jake Cronin for providing another exciting rocket program last week. The museum’s after-school group had a chance to hear about engines and what goes into making a rocket. Then the students built their own rockets, with nosecones, parachutes and motors and went outside to launch them. The program was a huge success, and all the rockets were successfully launched. Mattapoisett’s Fire Department13 viewsMattapoisett’s Fire Department opened its doors to the community on October 12 with a grand party filled with family, friends and pizza. The event was an opportunity for the department to highlight fire prevention while tiny tots donned helmets and rang the bell on an antique fire engine. “It’s a great success,” said Chief Andrew Murray of the event that hosted several hundred people of all ages. New Fire Engine Number 3 was on display having just a day before been added to the fleet.
