Rochester Memorial Day Boat Race48 viewsThe Rochester Memorial Day Boar Race took place this past Monday. The event, sponsored by the Rochester Fire Department, saw contestants build boats and race south along the Mattapoisett River. Old Rochester Youth Baseball League47 viewsThe first Opening Day since 2019 brought out Old Rochester Youth Baseball League players and their families on Saturday morning in Rochester. A parade began at the Dexter Lane baseball complex and made its way to Gifford Park, where ORYB’s David Arancio recognized the many years of service from Derek Mello, Peter Vieira and David Nelson, who all threw ceremonial first pitches. Arts in the Park47 viewsThe Marion Art Center’s annual “Arts in the Park” event was greeted by a gorgeous weekend, as cars lined Marion’s streets and visitors strolled through Bicentennial Park, ducking into the shade of white tents to visit the many artisans and their goods. Marion Natural History Museum47 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum's July Coastal Exploration group had a fun week exploring some of Marion's natural areas. We examined green frog tadpoles and a frog metamorphosis, were invited to explore Ram Island, visited the donkeys and learned about filter feeders, including some of the largest ones like whales. We explored a salt marsh, cleaned up a rocky beach at Planting Island and removed the plastic waste from the wrack line before it entered or reentered the bay. Photo courtesy of Elizabeth Leid

Marion Natural History Museum 47 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum enjoyed a presentation by Stephanie Ellis, executive director of Wild Care, Inc. We heard how various animals get hurt, be it hit by a car, rat-poisoned birds of prey, glue traps, etc., and how Wild Care takes care of many wildlife species in their organization. Stephanie brought in "Garv," the Eastern Box Turtle; he was raised as a pet and does not know how to survive in the woods anymore.
