One tradition well established the past half-dozen years was the sunflower in the outer harbor, where several vessels tied up to one another at the stern and aimed their bows outward toward the sea in 360-degree formation. The unusual weather event downed power lines and hundreds of trees, knocking out power to many homes north of Route 195. Television news crews descended from Boston, as the Mattapoisett Fire and Police departments worked with utility companies and many power lines to clean up roads and assist area residents coming home to frightening scenes.
