Tornado in Mattapoisett127 viewsAn EF-1 tornado touched down late Tuesday morning in Mattapoisett. The unusual weather event downed power lines and hundreds of trees, knocking out power to many homes north of Route 195. Television news crews descended from Boston, as the Mattapoisett Fire and Police departments worked with utility companies and many power lines to clean up roads and assist area residents coming home to frightening scenes. Tabor Academy127 viewsBy the numbers, the Tabor Academy community service co-curricular has produced this winter: 300 cookies and 22 lasagnas for local senior citizens and the Good Shepherd Church; 6 tables set and 48 place settings for 8 weekly dinners for local people in need; dozens of toys cleaned and prepared for local children; pounds of trash collected from local beaches; 10 hours volunteering at elementary school programs; and many news friends, including 1 iguana. Marion Natural History Museum127 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum afterschool group attempted to get to Bird Island on May 22 to visit the nesting tern population. Unfortunately, due to high winds and rough surf, we didn’t get all the way out there but enjoyed getting soaked on the ride out. We stopped briefly at Ram Island to try to get a little dried off before heading home. The kids had a blast checking out the beach and collecting shells.
