Marion Natural History Museum28 viewsDespite having to reschedule the trip due to poor weather, October 3 was a perfect day to explore. We learned a little about the history of the structures that were built and destroyed during different winter storms and the Hurricane of 1938 which wiped out everything but the lighthouse. We heard that the lighthouse was built in 1819, and the original lighthouse keeper was William S. Moore.

Marion Natural History Museum28 viewsOn November 15, the Marion Natural History Museum’s community group enjoyed a presentation on the geology of cranberry bogs with USDA soil scientist Maggie Payne. We heard about the glaciers that covered our area and left glacial moraines or hills in some areas of our state, as well as glacial outwash in our area. These outwash areas of sand and gravel can be extremely deep. Chunks of ice melting on the landscape turned into kettle ponds, which filled with groundwater and eventually plants.

Police chiefs Jason King (Mattapoisett), Robert Small (Rochester) and Richard Nighelli (Marion) presented $200 each from their respective departments to ORR’s Unified sports program, and nearly $2,700 was raised in ticket, T-shirt and concession sales. Keep on Plungin’ 28 viewsThe annual Keep on Plungin’ New Year’s Day swim drew well over 100 participants to Mattapoisett Town Beach, continuing a tradition started in 2013 by Will and Michelle Huggins to help families facing expenses related to cancer care. In the last two years, the community-driven effort has benefitted three families and Dana Farber with a $1,000 donation in Huggins’ honor. This year, organizers anticipate supporting at least two more families with checks for $2,000. Photos by Mick Colageo
