Volunteers at Sippican Elementary35 viewsVolunteers at Sippican Elementary (VASE) hosted their fourth Boosterthon Fun Run fundraiser last week. VASE works with Booster, a company that helps raise funds for enrichment activities such as in-school performances, field trips and afterschool programs. Students reached out to friends, family and businesses across 30 states and 7 countries; 87 percent of the student body registered with 79 percent earning donations for Sippican.

Marion Natural History Museum35 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum after-school group wishes to thank Isaac Perry and the Marion Harbormasters for allowing us to view some of our native ocean birds. On April 27, we were able to make it to Bird Island to view the nesting boxes that have been set up by the state for the soon-to-arrive terns, which rely on this island as a safe spot to raise their young. Mattapoisett Land Trust35 viewsOn May 6, volunteers from the Mattapoisett Land Trust planted over two dozen sunflower seedlings in a row along Route 6 at Dunseith Park, just in front of Salty the Seahorse. Don Cuddy donated the seedlings and organized the planting as a symbolic gesture of MLT standing in solidarity with the people of Ukraine. Old Rochester Youth Baseball League35 viewsThe first Opening Day since 2019 brought out Old Rochester Youth Baseball League players and their families on Saturday morning in Rochester. A parade began at the Dexter Lane baseball complex and made its way to Gifford Park, where ORYB’s David Arancio recognized the many years of service from Derek Mello, Peter Vieira and David Nelson, who all threw ceremonial first pitches. Marion Natural History Museum35 viewsOn June 8, the Marion Natural History Museum’s afterschool group enjoyed a wonderful trip to Ram Island in Marion. The students watched various crabs in the salt marsh, visited several of the occupied Osprey nests and walked the shoreline looking for shells. We also had the opportunity to visit Clara and Darcy, the Moore’s pet donkeys. Cuttyhunk35 viewsWendy Copps conducted an “Ocean in Motion” exercise at Barges Beach, and Kate Armstrong led children in an exploration of the saltmarsh as part of Old Hammondtown Elementary School’s field trip to Cuttyhunk on June 16. Approximately 70 Grade 6 graduates made the ferry ride from Mattapoisett to take part in a science field trip organized by the Mattapoisett Land Trust Education Committee and held in conjunction with the Massachusetts Cultural Council and the STEAM Academy.
