Grade 2 Basketball Playoffs47 viewsThe Grade 2 basketball playoffs brought out the best in March 10 action at Center School in Mattapoisett. The Warriors earned their spot in the championship game with a big, 10-2 victory over the Heat, while the Knicks advanced to the title game, narrowly edging the Celtics, 10-8. Old Hammondtown School’s 5th Grade poster contest47 viewsPaige Mallioux won first place and Willow Ruel second in Old Hammondtown School’s 5th Grade poster contest with the theme “Be a Cool Community, Plant Trees.” The Massachusetts Department Conservation and Recreation (DCR) recognizes Mattapoisett as one of the state’s Tree City USA member municipalities, and one of the town’s member activities is the annual art contest that fosters awareness in next generations about precious resources.

After Class Enrichment 47 viewsPerforming arts and drama courses were offered as part of this year's After Class Enrichment (A.C.E.) sessions at Sippican Elementary School. Students combined painted glass and sand art, assisted by Tabor After School Community Service Volunteers, created clay handles for their vases as part of a collaborative project with the Marion Historical Society, participated in 3D printing, and worked on "Once Upon a Time" STEAM activities.

Volunteers at Sippican Elementary47 viewsVolunteers at Sippican Elementary (VASE) hosted their fourth Boosterthon Fun Run fundraiser last week. VASE works with Booster, a company that helps raise funds for enrichment activities such as in-school performances, field trips and afterschool programs. Students reached out to friends, family and businesses across 30 states and 7 countries; 87 percent of the student body registered with 79 percent earning donations for Sippican.

Marion Natural History Museum47 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum after-school group had a chance to take a closeup look at some of the amphibians and invertebrates that require these special habitats to survive. We found a leaf-rolling caddisfly larvae, several colorful chronomidge larvae, salamander and wood-frog eggs. All specimens made their way safely back to their specific pool, and the kids have learned to have a new respect for these “nurseries” of the forest. Marion Natural History Museum47 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum wishes to thank Plymouth County Entomologist Blake Dinius for his presentation, "To Bee or not to Bee." Blake explained that although wasps are not well-received, all of our bees are wasps. However, not all wasps are bees. Bees are a subgroup of wasps and can be seen as a "vegetarian" wasp and get their protein from pollen. Bees are also much hairier than wasps. Blake jokes that bees are "hippie" wasps.
