Ned’s Point Lighthouse171 viewsTuesday afternoon offered a sneak preview of the reopening of Ned’s Point Lighthouse scheduled for Saturday, October 9, from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. Cathy Hardy and Mike Lally, a Texas couple, happened to be in the right place at the right time to become the first visitors to the 183-year-old lighthouse that had been closed for the past two years and three months. The lighthouse typically draws 100 visitors from all over the world when open during any regular, three-hour session. Photo by Mick Colageo

Marion Natural History Museum171 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum wishes to thank state forester James Rassmen for helping us to better understand the importance of trees and forests. We learned that not all tree rings are alike, how to tell how old a white pine is, and the importance of trees in combating climate change. Upcoming programs can be viewed on the museum's website: www.marionmuseum.org. Photos courtesy of Elizabeth Leidhold

Marion Natural History Museum171 viewsOn October 20, the Marion Natural History Museum’s after-school group spent time learning a little about our migrating bird populations. We found out that the Arctic tern migrates 50,000 miles, which is the longest distance of any bird. The ruby-throated hummingbird can migrate as far as Mexico and Central America in search of flowers and insects. We then went on a bird walk and managed to find a mourning dove, blue jay, European starling, black-capped chickadee, and belted kingfisher, among other birds.

Salty's Silvery Moon Soiree171 viewsOn the evening of October 23, the Mattapoisett Land Trust hosted its annual Salty’s Silvery Moon Soiree at Dunseith Gardens. The yearly autumn event finds families gathering around a roaring fire pit and toasting marshmallows or creating delicious desserts while listening to live music. On this night, music was provided by Jeff Dunn, and storyteller Danny Dullea entertained all with marvelous tales about the natural world. Photos by Marilou Newell

Christmas Swim171 viewsKate Butler was last to arrive but last one out of the water after two dozen people braved the cold, raw elements of the 2021 Christmas morning swim held December 25 at Mattapoisett Town Beach. The event was held for the benefit of Helping Hands and Hooves, a program run by Julie Craig and Debbie Dyson that offers experiences, especially horseback riding, to people with cognitive challenges who have aged out of the many children's programs. Charles Stockbridge171 viewsOn March 27, local artist Charles Stockbridge gave a painting demonstration in the style of impressionist works at the Mattapoisett Public Library. Stockbridge is a classically-trained historian and painter whose works have hung in galleries and homes both near and far. While he is best known for landscapes and marine themes, Stockbridge has recently been exploring paintings that are more in the genre of a Claude Monet.
