Keep on Plungin’ 57 viewsThe annual Keep on Plungin’ New Year’s Day swim drew well over 100 participants to Mattapoisett Town Beach, continuing a tradition started in 2013 by Will and Michelle Huggins to help families facing expenses related to cancer care. In the last two years, the community-driven effort has benefitted three families and Dana Farber with a $1,000 donation in Huggins’ honor. This year, organizers anticipate supporting at least two more families with checks for $2,000. Photos by Mick Colageo

Marion Natural History Museum56 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum's afterschool group had a wonderful time setting off their rockets on June 9. Despite the blistering hot weather, the rockets were all successfully launched, and the parachutes deployed (most of the time). The students had built their rockets at home before the program with a YouTube video created by the program's presenter, Mike Cronin.

Marion Natural History Museum56 viewsOn October 20, the Marion Natural History Museum’s after-school group spent time learning a little about our migrating bird populations. We found out that the Arctic tern migrates 50,000 miles, which is the longest distance of any bird. The ruby-throated hummingbird can migrate as far as Mexico and Central America in search of flowers and insects. We then went on a bird walk and managed to find a mourning dove, blue jay, European starling, black-capped chickadee, and belted kingfisher, among other birds.
