Marion Natural History Museum159 viewsOn October 20, the Marion Natural History Museum’s after-school group spent time learning a little about our migrating bird populations. We found out that the Arctic tern migrates 50,000 miles, which is the longest distance of any bird. The ruby-throated hummingbird can migrate as far as Mexico and Central America in search of flowers and insects. We then went on a bird walk and managed to find a mourning dove, blue jay, European starling, black-capped chickadee, and belted kingfisher, among other birds.

Marion Museum of Natural History159 viewsThe Marion Museum of Natural History celebrated its 150th anniversary with a Friday night discussion on the 700-pound meteorite Coahuila, led by Mark Munkacsy. Later in the evening, Ted and Elizabeth Brainard visited Coahuila with Executive Director Liz Leidhold, while Treasurer Mike Cronin set up a telescope on the sidewalk out front of the Elizabeth Taber Library where attendees took turns viewing Jupiter and its moons. Salty Soiree159 viewsThe annual Mattapoisett Land Trust Salty Soiree held on October 22 at Dunseith Park was a huge success, as young and old enjoyed a fire pit, 200 luminaries and s'mores. Adding to the festive event was music provided by Jeff Dunn and unique, fantasy-filled puppet stories and songs by Jackson Gillman. Summer Reading Program159 viewsAs a kickoff to the summer reading program at the Elizabeth Taber Library and summer Natural History Museum programming, the Town of Marion was treated to a visit from a full-size whale, two very large dinosaurs and one baby dino named Spike. The Summer Block Party event held on June 24 started inside the Music Hall due to weather but later moved outside. The event also featured faux archeology digs and face painting.
