Marion Natural History Museum137 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum after-school group had a wonderful time learning about the Eastern Box Turtle with Brian Butler of Oxbow Associates, Inc. Brian explained why land turtles are rounder than turtles that live in water, and that turtles have been on earth for 200 million years. Box turtles protect themselves by pulling their heads and legs into their shell and closing up, however they don't move very fast.

Mattapoisett Library137 viewsOn August 7, the Mattapoisett Library hosted the New England Coastal Wildlife Alliance. Interns from the Wareham-based agency gave a hands-on talk to small children on local sea turtles. NECWA studies local marine life, collecting data for a variety of agencies. New Year Plunge137 viewsIt was not publicized or heavily promoted, but traditions are hard to break. That was the case on New Year’s Day 2022 when a hearty group of some 200 “plungers” arrived at Mattapoisett Town Beach for their annual dip in the harbor. Last year the event was not publicized at all, said this year’s organizers, Heather and Michael Bichsel. “But we decided since people were going to show up anyway, we’d help to keep this going.”
