Pond Hockey136 viewsAfter winters so warm that ice could not form or drought so severe that vernal pools, intermittent streams and frog ponds had dried up, the 2022 winter season has proven perfect for outdoor skating. Rainfall throughout the fall and winter seasons has filled up even the smallest depressions with water sufficient to make nature’s skating rinks glisten anew. The old frog pond located just south of Tinkham Hill Road on North Street has been a wintertime favorite for decades. January 27, 2022 edition

Rochester Historical Commission136 viewsThe Rochester Historical Commission began its historic plaque program as a way to enhance knowledge of the town's history. Recently, a plaque was placed at the Town Pound on Snipatuit Rd. by commission member, George Owen. The pound was not for household pets but for stray farm animals and problem animals of all sizes. While there were once many stone pounds of this type, most are gone. This pound from 1741 is a concrete reminder of Rochester's past.

Marion Natural History Museum135 viewsOn October 24, the Marion Natural History Museum held a “Marion Archaeology Day” at the Marion Music Hall. We welcomed Dianna Doucette and Erin Flynn of Public Archaeology Labs (PALS), who had conducted a survey of the museum’s artifacts in 1998. Dianna and Erin helped us understand some of the history of the area over the past 10,000 years, from the Wampanoag people through the colonists and beyond. They explained how their company might become involved in the investigation of these sites, usually through

Santa Arrives135 viewsThe Town of Rochester wasn’t able to host its traditional Christmas celebration this year, but the Fire Department made sure that Santa and Mrs. Claus and Sparky visited with children on Sunday outside Town Hall, where Board of Selectmen Chairman Paul Ciaburri presided over the lighting of the tree. Ciaburri was thrilled to report that the Christmas Angels, run by Lorraine Thompson with volunteers from the Council on Aging, the public library, local businesses, schools, and churches haven’t missed a beat.

Valentine’s Day Drive-thru135 viewsVolunteers distributed over 100 dinners during the Marion Council on Aging’s Valentine’s Day drive-thru event on February 13 at the Cushing Community Center. The dinners donated by Mike Crosby helped make up for the fact the town’s seniors were not able to enjoy Valentine’s Day quite like they did last year inside the building with music and dancing.
