Overcast skies were welcomed but the July 4th heat was tough for the runners and the cheering crowds who begged for shade. Coming in 1st place in the men’s division was Brian Hughes with a time of 51:38 minutes. The Mattapoisett-Fairhaven Parents Music Club used the proceeds from the opening dance that year to purchase musical instruments for the Fairhaven High School band, and square dancing inspired one local girl to become a professional square-dance caller.
