Freezin' for a Reason 2014184 viewsParticipants in the 2014 Polar Plunge on January 1 were encouraged to wear costumes for the event, which raised thousands of dollars for the BAM Foundation. BAM is an organization that offers financial assistance to families battling cancer to help offset the unexpected costs of cancer treatment. Hundreds of people turned out for the event, with over a hundred participants who plunged into 34 degree waters, just a few degrees warmer than the 28 degree air temperature that morning. Blind Date with a Book184 viewsThe Mattapoisett Library had a whole day of programs and activities in honor of Valentine’s Day. If you were looking for a new literary lover without all the hassle, the library set up a “Blind Date with a Book” display, where new books of all genres were wrapped up like secrets, waiting to be opened and cuddled up with over the long weekend. Fireworks Gala184 viewsPeople were still trickling in at 8:00 pm as the Marion Fireworks Committee’s second annual beach party on April 5 started picking up the pace with music and lights provided by Fun 107’s Michael Rock, and guests holding drinks with little umbrellas began shaking their hips. There was the scent of tropical coconutty sunblock in the air as guests perused the items up for auction, including a luxury African photo safari valued at $5,500. Photo by Jean Perry

Ned’s Point Easter184 viewsThe sky was blue above the greening grass on that sunny spring Mattapoisett morning by the sea. On April 12, families gathered at Ned’s Point to celebrate Easter early with a traditional Easter egg hunt, sponsored by the Mattapoisett Lions Club. The Easter Bunny hopped over for a visit, giving children hugs and high-fives as parents scurried to take photos and comfort the smaller ones who were a little reluctant to approach. World Tai Chi and Qigong Day184 viewsA group in Mattapoisett joined others across the globe in celebrating World Tai Chi and Qigong Day on April 26 at 10:00 am, just as other groups did at 10:00 am in their local time zones. Led by Tai Chi Practitioner Colman Fink, 15 locals moved gracefully together with conscious breath in the downstairs of the Mattapoisett Free Library – thanks to the rain that dampened the plan to meet at Ned’s Point for a second year in a row.
