Healing Little Hearts 5K 202 viewsUpward of 300 runners competed in the inaugural Healing Little Hearts 5K on a beautiful Columbus Day morning. The organization helps fund research efforts into children’s heart defects. “From my family and from the families you’re helping, thank you,” said Kelly Weglowski, who, along with husband, Marc, and daughter Jillian founded Healing Little Hearts in the midst of their son and brother Brady’s own battle. The presentation was a riveting tale of the construction and subsequent journeys of the last whale ship built in Mattapoisett and this newspaper’s namesake, the bark Wanderer. Mendell recounted the yellow pine and live oak, the charismatic caulkers and other builders, and the fact that the Wanderer found its greatest successes in the early 1900s before its demise at Cuttyhunk. Cranberry Program202 viewsOn Wednesday, Nov. 20th, he Marion Natural History Museum after-school group investigated how a cranberry bog formed in New England. Museum Director, Elizabeth Leidhold, helped the kids to explore the physical structure of a bog, and how to tell a healthy berry from a rotten one. The students then made “mini-bogs” to take home.
