Marion Natural History Museum302 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum Explored Group led by the staff from MattRec had a great week exploring Mattapoisett's open spaces. Along with crabbing, netting fish, building cairns, discovering types of seaweeds and saltmarsh vegetation, and plenty of swimming, we also met Coast Guard Fairhaven and Marion Flotilla members for a tour of Ned's Point lighthouse. We learned about oyster farming with Bob Field and enjoyed a boat tour of Mattapoisett Harbor with the Harbormaster's Office.

108th Annual Rochester Grange Fair 302 viewsThe 108th Annual Rochester Grange Fair was held on August 18 with a wide variety of produce, floral bouquets, baked goods, handicrafts, and works of art. The state first place winner for her diorama depicting a barn that contained fresh eggs and produce was Susan Guiducci of Dartmouth. There were a total of 35 entries vying for other blue ribbons in many other categories. Sue LaFluer, grange secretary and one of the fair organizers said that participants ranged in age from 6 years of age and beyond.

Marion Natural History Museum302 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum afterschool group had a wonderful time learning about “Amazing Arthropods” with entomologist Blake Dinius of Plymouth County Extension Service. Members of the group were able to handle a couple of beautiful Io moths, which as caterpillars feed on maple leaves.
