Learning From The Past1213 viewsThird Grade students at Rochester’s Memorial School recently got acquainted with Rochester’s rich, historic past thanks to members of the Rochester Historical Commission. Students were treated to a hands-on experience with old toys, primitive household items and educational tools, and learned about early church customs, Rochester’s Native Americans, and changes in the town boundaries as Marion, Mattapoisett, and Wareham eventually broke off from the large township of Rochester to form their own towns.

Veterans Day Speaker1208 viewsLieutenant Commander Daniel Parilla, USN, of the Newport Naval War College will be the Principal Speaker at the Mattapoisett Veterans Day Ceremonies on Friday, November 11 starting at 11:00 am at Old Hammondtown School. LCDR Parilla wears the Heroic Action Air Medal with Combat Distinguishing Device, and two Strike Flight Air Medals, along with various other commendations.

Citizen Cane1197 viewsMinnie Fermino of 12 Baptist Street in Mattapoisett was recently bestowed with the Boston Post Cane as the town’s oldest resident of record. The cane was presented to Ms. Fermino by Selectman Steve Lombard, Selectman Ray Andrews, and Town Clerk Barbara Sullivan. Also in attendance were Ms. Fermino’s children Caroline, Maurice (Mudgie), Peter and David. Created by Boston Post publisher Edwin A. Grozier, the Boston Post Cane is a New England tradition which dates back to 1909.

Arts in Action1196 viewsSippican School First Grader Emily Hiller tries to create the lifelike ceramic fish from Grainger Pottery on display at the recent “Arts in Action” program held at the school. On May 13, the Marion school hosted its first “Arts in Action” show for members of the staff and local artists. Among other interesting and unique displays were Russian Egg painting, bird carving, mural painting, flip-flop sandal decorating and portrait sculpture.

Safe Landing1195 viewsA U.S. Army Blackhawk helicopter, which landed in a field on the Rochester/Marion town line, drew a lot of on lookers. The helicopter, which is from Otis Air Base, landed in the field for cautionary, reasons just after noon time on Friday.
