Christmas Day Swim203 viewsThe Helping Hands and Hooves’ annual Christmas Day Swim was preceded by a polar plunge in the weather and a brief ‘snownado’ of sorts as the winds swept snow and sleet across the area only minutes before enthusiastic participants in costume arrived at the Mattapoisett Town Beach and raced into the icy waters. Marion Natural History Museum203 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum after school group had a wonderful time exploring what works (and what doesn't) when constructing a wooden sailboat. The students constructed their own boat, either a single hull or catamaran, and added a sail and keel. After decorating their vessels, students raced the boats down two long rain gutters filled with water. Many thanks to engineer Mark Whalen for yet another terrific program! Marion Natural History Museum203 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum wishes to thank Blake Dinius, entomologist with the Plymouth County Extension Service, for sharing his knowledge of our backyard bugs. Did you know that the cecropia moth is Massachusetts’ largest insect? And that it has a wingspan of up to 6 inches? Blake also brought in a live praying mantis and many specimens of moths and winged insects under glass to take a close up look at with magnifiers. The museum also wishes to thank all the volunteers who helped with the program
