This year’s weather was a major improvement from last year’s soaking, but overall participation was down this year. The Scoop on S.C.O.P.E. 216 viewsORRJHS 7th-grade students participated in the annual S.C.O.P.E. cardboard boat race at the beach at the Mattapoisett YMCA last Wednesday, June 20. The students engineer and build their boats – some sink, some sail – and this year team “Funky Monkey” came in first place. There were 15 boats in all this year, all created by teams of four. Lions Club Triathlon216 viewsUnder merciful overcast skies on July 15, the 37th annual Lions Club Triathlon found 115 participants including seven relay teams vying for first place bragging rights. Coming in 1st place in the men’s division was Brian Hughes with a time of 51:38 minutes. Over 100 students participated in selections that included metal art, welding, a combo of carpentry and CADD, auto maintenance, computer science, culinary arts, Lego robotics, electronics engineering, cosmetology, and sports. The storm brought strong wind and cold rain to the area, especially at the turn around Ned’s Point Lighthouse, dampening the day but not the sentiment behind the Women’s Fund of Southeastern Massachusetts’ largest annual fundraising event.
