Marion Natural History Museum206 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum after school group had a wonderful time exploring what works (and what doesn't) when constructing a wooden sailboat. The students constructed their own boat, either a single hull or catamaran, and added a sail and keel. After decorating their vessels, students raced the boats down two long rain gutters filled with water. Many thanks to engineer Mark Whalen for yet another terrific program! RMS Students vs. Staff Basketball Game206 viewsTough luck again this year for the sixth graders at RMS during the annual students vs. staff basketball game on Friday night. Although students were able to tie the game and gain a temporary slight lead, in the end the staff’s moves took them down, 60-56. Fifth graders, it’s up to you next year! Photos by Deina Zartman

ORR ‘super’ stars206 viewsThe ORR ‘super’ stars were out on February 7 for the annual ORR Senior Superlatives Gala. The “Best…” and “Most Likely to…” seniors were celebrated that night, while students also mourned last week’s loss of ORR 2017 grad Becket Kiernan, last year’s winner of “Best Laugh” and “Unsung Hero,” who passed away in a California hospital just weeks after finishing his basic training for the Marines. Marion Natural History Museum206 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum's after school group had a great time learning the difference between wild animal tracks, including coyote, raccoon, and bobcat. We also enjoyed practicing how to move like various animals by waddling, walking, bounding, and hopping. Bounding like a fisher cat and hopping like a snow shoe hare were by far the most difficult gaits to practice due to the placement of the rear feet versus the front. Many thanks to Jennifer Carlino for sharing her considerable expertise with us

Marion Natural History Museum206 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum's after school group enjoyed learning about life in salt marshes with the New England Coastal Wildlife Alliance (NECWA). We discovered that the diamondback terrapin can live 25-40 years, and that the warmest part of the terrapin's nest will result in females and the coolest part, males. The students practiced measuring turtle carapaces and taking a close look at the shells of different turtle species. The Marion Natural History Museum thanks Carol "Krill" Carson, Aanchal Gu
