Practically Penguins 243 viewsThe waterfowl in the harbors, rivers, and estuaries of Mattapoisett over the weekend got a taste of what it’s like to be penguins. Marion Natural History Museum243 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum after school group had a wonderful time exploring what works (and what doesn't) when constructing a wooden sailboat. The students constructed their own boat, either a single hull or catamaran, and added a sail and keel. After decorating their vessels, students raced the boats down two long rain gutters filled with water. Many thanks to engineer Mark Whalen for yet another terrific program! Marion Natural History Museum243 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum’s afterschool group had a chance to learn to identify certain local trees in winter by their bark. Students compared red cedar bark to red pine, took a close look at various lichens and mosses that use tree bark as a surface to grow on, and counted rings in a log supplied by Hartley Saw Mill in Rochester.

Found Objects243 viewsAt the Marion Art Center, the artists featured in the MAC’s latest show “Found Objects” have ‘discarded’ tradition for trash. All the works on display are made from ‘upcycled’ and ‘repurposed’ bits and bobs, proving that some art literally can be trash. Photos by Jean Perry
