Tabor Academy Polar Plunge298 viewsTabor Academy hosted its second annual Polar Plunge on Sunday, January 21 at Silvershell Beach to raise money for the school’s Special Olympics Young Athletes Program. Students from ‘fundraising rival’ Sandwich High also showed up, with scores of students and staff making a dash in and quickly out of the chilly waters. The plunge raised about $8,000. Marion Natural History Museum298 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum after school group had a wonderful time exploring what works (and what doesn't) when constructing a wooden sailboat. The students constructed their own boat, either a single hull or catamaran, and added a sail and keel. Marion Natural History Museum298 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum’s afterschool group had a chance to learn to identify certain local trees in winter by their bark. Students compared red cedar bark to red pine, took a close look at various lichens and mosses that use tree bark as a surface to grow on, and counted rings in a log supplied by Hartley Saw Mill in Rochester.

Marion Natural History Museum298 viewsOn Wednesday, the Marion Natural History Museum after-school group had fun inspecting some of the residents of vernal pools. With the use of magnifying glasses, we studied wood frog and salamander egg masses, log-cabin caddis-fly larvae, tadpoles, and various bugs. All specimens were returned to their original pool and now the students can recognize and, hopefully, protect these animals in the future. We also had a chance to handle some sphagnum moss and took a close look at the plant's structure to see why
