Rochester Historical Society270 viewsThe Rochester Historical Society welcomed Tri-Town residents to its Open House at the East Rochester Church on Saturday afternoon, displaying local wedding fashions, music, and art from the early 1900s. Frosty Runner Road Race270 viewsRunners who participated in the third annual Frosty Runner Road Race enjoyed spring-like weather, perfect for a 10 mile or 3 mile run through the neighborhoods of Rochester. The two separate races were run simultaneously, beginning and ending at Old Colony Regional Vocational Technical High School on Saturday February 1. Take a Hike!270 views In our first installment of “Take a Hike!” we visited Church’s Field in Rochester off Mattapoisett Road. This Rochester Land trust property is easily accessible, with off-road parking and a wide, mulched trail – and, despite the persistent occupation of winter, there is beauty to be found in every season in Tri-Town. The trail loops through a Holly tree grove, passing mossy glacial outcroppings of rocks, and leads to a river, where the historical ruins of the Church family saw mill wait to be rediscovered.

Memorial Day Boat Race270 viewsKeeping with an 80 year-old tradition, people with their home made boats raced toward the finish line during the annual Rochester Memorial Day Boat Race. Beginning at Grandma Hartley’s Reservoir on Snipatuit Road, boaters paddled the almost 12-mile race route to Herring Weir at River Road in Mattapoisett. There were 65 teams in all. Cottage Restored270 viewsA family has restored an old 1925 stone cottage on Snipatuit Pond in Rochester to its original state, and owner Andrea King gave a presentation on the restoration process to the Rochester Historical Society who got to see step by step how the King family, living in the U.S. Virgin Islands, brought the little cottage back to life to make it their second home.
