Marion Natural History Museum103 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum braved the snowy weather Wednesday and attending members were rewarded with 18 different shoreline bird sightings. The sightings included a large “raft” of sleepy Greater Scaup, Canada Geese, American Black Duck, Surf Scoter, Long-tailed Duck, Bufflehead, Common Goldeneye, Hooded Merganser, Red-breasted Merganser, Horned Grebe, Ring-billed Gull, Herring Gull, Common Loon, American Crow, American Robin, House Finch, Song Sparrow and Northern Cardinal. Despite the sweltering temperatures, we managed to see the following: 2 Monarchs, Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, Spicebush Swallowtail, 7 Sachems, a Zabulon Skipper, a Viceroy, 3 Clouded Sulphurs, Orange Sulphur, Pearl Crescent and Cabbage White butterflies. We had a wonderful time hearing about their favorite food sources and the host plants they cann

Marion Natural History Museum103 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum’s afterschool group had a terrific time constructing their own rockets for launching. This program was so popular it had to be offered twice! The kids had a hands-on introduction to the engineering principles of propulsion and lift. Every rocket managed a successful launch hundreds of feet in the air, and most were safely carried down by the parachutes. The two-story gallery walls are covered with works done in oil, water color, fine art photography, acrylics, gouache, pastels, wood blocks, as well as stained glass and wooden sculptures. We collected examples of plankton, caught fish and frogs in our nets, investigated tide pools and took trips to Bird and Ram Island. The students had a chance to take a close look at some of the artifacts he's found in his backyard and were shown how to use a metal detector to help find some of these items.

Pumpkin Palooza102 viewsSaturday’s Pumpkin Palooza hosted by the Marion Council of Aging and the Recreation Department at the Cushing Community Center. Families decorated pumpkins, and children enjoyed face painting, a hula-hoop contest, dancing, a visit from Pine Meadow Farm animals and refreshments supported by Tabor Academy volunteers. Pumpkins were later illuminated, giving the pavilion an eerie weekend presence. Sixty-five families preregistered to participate in the event inspired by Marion citizen Dianne Cosman
