Marion Natural History Museum14 viewsOn November 30, the Marion Natural History Museum's after-school group had a chance to learn about the different types of trees in our area and to look at some equipment used by foresters to help protect our trees. By looking at a tree "cookie," we were able to count the rings to determine its age and learn about the services, the different sections, including the heart wood, sap wood and bark or phloem provides the tree.

Marion’s Christmas Stroll 14 viewsThe Town of Marion’s annual Christmas Stroll held on December 11 featured rides with Santa and Mrs. Claus on horse-drawn carriages, live entertainment from the Sippican Elementary School musicians, Christmas songs performed by Tabor Academy students, children’s activities and many refreshments offered along the sidewalks by village merchants. Marion Natural History Museum14 viewsOn December 21, the Marion Natural History Museum's after school group had a wonderful time working with crafts from natural and recycled materials during our annual holiday party. Our group had a blast making ornaments (and eating junk food) during the event, and everyone brought home an ornament or two to share with the family.

Spruce Tree14 viewsAmidst wet snow that tailed off into a cold Tuesday morning, the large spruce tree situated between the Elizabeth Taber Library and Sippican Elementary School was taken down after it was found to be a safety hazard. The tree is believed to have sustained a recent lightning strike, and large sections of the tree showed major rot. Some of the wood will be used to add to the memorial to four Sippican students honored at the site since 2009, and the bottom 3 feet of the trunk was preserved.

The museum’s after-school group had a chance to hear about engines and what goes into making a rocket. Then the students built their own rockets, with nosecones, parachutes and motors and went outside to launch them. The program was a huge success, and all the rockets were successfully launched. Blessing of the Fleet14 viewsThe Reverend Eric Fialho, rector at Saint Gabriel’s Parish, presided as the Town of Marion held its first-ever Blessing of the Fleet on January 1 in Sippican Harbor. One tradition well established the past half-dozen years was the sunflower in the outer harbor, where several vessels tied up to one another at the stern and aimed their bows outward toward the sea in 360-degree formation. Pumpkin Palooza14 viewsMarion’s annual Pumpkin Palooza held Saturday at the Cushing Community Center brought out kids who had fun carving up pumpkins and enjoying music with DJ Dave.
