Marion Natural History Museum 114 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum enjoyed a presentation by Stephanie Ellis, executive director of Wild Care, Inc. We heard how various animals get hurt, be it hit by a car, rat-poisoned birds of prey, glue traps, etc., and how Wild Care takes care of many wildlife species in their organization. Stephanie brought in "Garv," the Eastern Box Turtle; he was raised as a pet and does not know how to survive in the woods anymore.

Betty Parsons114 viewsAt the Marion Art Center on display through October 28 is a retrospective of works done by gallerist and artist Betty Parsons. From as early as the 1930s through to 1980, Parsons received growing acclaim for her ability and wisdom in selecting art done by emerging artists, primarily those expressed via abstract visual interpretations. Parsons was also an artist, described as both a painter and a sculptor for her work in watercolor and acrylic, but also a sculptor for her found items and driftwood creations.

The sightings included a large “raft” of sleepy Greater Scaup, Canada Geese, American Black Duck, Surf Scoter, Long-tailed Duck, Bufflehead, Common Goldeneye, Hooded Merganser, Red-breasted Merganser, Horned Grebe, Ring-billed Gull, Herring Gull, Common Loon, American Crow, American Robin, House Finch, Song Sparrow and Northern Cardinal. Marion Natural History Museum114 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum would like to thank David Orwig, forest ecologist with the Harvard Forest, for his wonderful presentation about Old Growth Forests on April 7. Orwig discussed some the tree species to look for and explained that the size of the tree does not matter when looking for truly old trees. He showed us how to determine the age of a tree, why the same species of tree might have different bark depending on age and why some of the oldest trees can be relatively small in size. A Vimeo

Marion Natural History Museum114 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum's afterschool group had a chance to explore and map Ram Island with Dr. Michael Moore and Mrs. Hannah Moore this week. We investigated salt marshes and mapped osprey nests, found some horseshoe crabs and met some donkeys, chickens and friendly dogs on both our Wednesday and Thursday trips.
