Marion Natural History Museum103 viewsFriday night the Marion Natural History Museum hosted a standing-room-only presentation about the Black Bear population in Massachusetts. According to state fish and wildlife biologists Jason Zimmer and Steven Wright, the population is rapidly expanding into the eastern part of our state. Jason gave us some good tips to keep black bears out of our property, including removing bird feeders, covering and keeping our garbage contained, and how to keep bears out of our livestock. Marion Holiday House103 viewsThe 33rd annual Marion Holiday House Tour was enjoyed by many on December 9. The annual fundraiser began at the Handy Tavern, the headquarters of the Sippican Woman's Club, which hosted the event. The tavern was built in 1812 and has been owned by the club for many decades. Club historian Jeanine Bruen shared that the club is celebrating its 100th year and for nearly that long has been taking care of this structure in the heart of Marion village. Dr. Michael Moore, Right Whale biologist with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, gave us the most recent data collected about this species. The wind was too strong to land on Bird Island, but we had a chance to view the activity on the island from the water and watch the terns catch some fish.
